Records changes to symbolic mappings and explains whether shifts are intentional narrative development or corrections.
The most dangerous kind of symbolic change is the one nobody remembers making, because later work cannot tell whether a meaning shifted on purpose or slipped by accident. Symbol Drift Revision Log is the dated record of every change to the symbol-meaning mappings, each entry stating what changed, when, and — the load-bearing field — why: is this an intentional development, a deliberate inversion, or a correction of a mistake? Its defining move is the historical record with intent attached: it does not describe the current code (a table does that) or set future rules (a guide does that); it preserves the trail of how the code got here, so a shift can be read as authored rather than as drift. It is the archetype's memory against accidental inconsistency across revisions and time.
Example¶
A long-running graphic novel uses a cracked mirror as a recurring symbol. In the early chapters it means the protagonist's fractured sense of self; by the middle chapters the author wants it to shift, through a story of recovery, toward a self being deliberately remade; near the end a repaired mirror should mark integration. Across years of production and a changing team of inkers and colorists, the author keeps a Symbol Drift Revision Log. Chapter 3: cracked mirror established, meaning fractured selfhood. Chapter 11 entry: mirror now shown mid-repair, meaning changed to deliberate self-remaking — this is an intentional inversion, signaled by the visible act of mending, not a continuity error. Chapter 19: mirror whole, meaning integration; note that the consistency rule "a cracked mirror always signals damage" is now formally retired as of chapter 11.
When a new colorist in chapter 14 renders a background mirror uncracked without knowing the arc, the log catches it: the change has no entry, no stated intent, so it is drift to be fixed — either restore the crack or, if the author wants it, add an entry making it deliberate. The log is what lets the team distinguish an authored transformation from an accident, years after the decision.
How it works¶
- Log every mapping change. When a symbol's meaning, form, or permitted use shifts, record the before, the after, and the date.
- Attach an intent verdict. Classify each change: intentional development, deliberate inversion, or correction of an error — the field that turns a change record into a coherence tool.
- Mark deliberate inversions explicitly. Where a symbol's meaning is purposely flipped or transformed, flag it and note how the work signals that the flip is intended, so it is not read as inconsistency.
- Reconcile with the consistency rules. When a change retires or amends a "must stay stable" rule, record that the rule itself has moved, so the current code and its history stay in sync.
Tuning parameters¶
- Logging threshold — every micro-adjustment versus only meaning-level changes. Fine logging preserves full provenance but is onerous; coarse logging is sustainable but can miss a slow drift built from small steps.
- Intent-field rigor — a free-text note versus a required, defended classification. Rigor makes the intentional/accidental line crisp but adds friction to every change.
- Retroactive reconstruction — logging only from now on versus back-filling past changes from existing work. Back-filling gives a complete history but costs archival effort and guesses at old intent.
- Coupling to the rule set — whether a logged change is required to update the consistency rules. Tight coupling keeps code and history aligned; loose coupling is lighter but lets the two diverge.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is preserving why the code is what it is, which is exactly what the archetype's seventh move calls for: a change record so later work does not drift accidentally. It is the only mechanism that can separate a signalled transformation from an accident after the fact, and it blunts the archetype's most common failure — decorative drift — by making every unlogged shift stand out as suspect. The underlying phenomenon it fights is semantic drift: the gradual, unnoticed migration of a sign's meaning through repeated reuse, which a dated record with intent is designed to catch.[n1]
Its failure mode is that a log records only the changes someone thought to log; a drift that happens below the logging threshold, or a change made by a collaborator who never touches the log, leaves no trace and passes as continuity. It can also become a bureaucratic archive nobody consults, giving the feeling of governance without the practice. The classic misuse is retrofitting the log after the fact to make an accidental inconsistency look intentional — laundering drift into "development." The guarding discipline is to log changes as they are made rather than reconstructed, require the intent field to be defended at the time, and pair the log with a drift audit that surfaces unlogged changes for classification.
