Diagnostic map — instantiates Decision-Tempo Decoupling
Charts where an external tempo is pushing you to respond, who profits when you react, and which of those pressures you are free to ignore or buffer — so reaction stops being automatic.
The Tempo Pressure Map is a diagnostic of the pressure field, not the plan. It plots every external event that is currently generating "shouldn't we do something?" energy, marks how much faster each source can move than you can respond well — the tempo asymmetry — and then does the move that defines it: it labels who benefits when you react. That single attribution is what lets you draw the line between pressure you must answer and pressure you are free to ignore or buffer, because pressure with a beneficiary is often manufactured. The map turns "everything feels urgent" into a marked chart where each pressure has a source, a speed, and a verdict — and where you can see, on one page, how much of your apparent obligation is really the faster actor choosing your agenda.
Example¶
A consumer-electronics brand's communications team is being whipsawed by social media. Each morning brings a fresh flare-up — a complaint thread trending, an influencer subtweet, a competitor's dig, a screenshot going half-viral — and each arrives with someone internally asking whether the brand should respond now. They build a Tempo Pressure Map for one week of flare-ups. For each event they record three things: the source's velocity (a coordinated influencer push can post faster than legal can clear a sentence; a lone annoyed customer cannot), who gains if the brand answers fast (the sparring competitor gains a public opponent; the outrage-farming account gains reach; the genuinely-harmed customer gains a fix), and whether a reply buys anything or merely feeds the cycle.
Mapped that way, the field sorts itself. Two flare-ups are genuine — a real defect surfacing, a safety question — and get answered. Three are engagement traps where a fast public reply is exactly the reward the instigator is fishing for, and get marked ignore / monitor. One is a slow-burn that can be buffered behind a holding line while facts are gathered. The output is not a response; it is a marked map that tells the team which clocks it is allowed to stop watching.
How it works¶
- Inventory the pressure, not your tasks. List the external events currently generating response-energy, regardless of whether anyone has acted on them.
- Tag velocity. For each source, how fast can it generate new stimuli versus how fast can you respond well? The gap is the asymmetry that the faster actor is exploiting.
- Attribute the pressure. Name who benefits from your reaction. This is the distinguishing step — a manufactured urgency almost always has someone on the other end who profits from your clock being set by theirs.
- Draw the boundary. Give each pressure a verdict — answer, monitor, ignore, buffer — separating what genuinely couples to you from what only appears to. The map stops here; it does not choose the response.
Tuning parameters¶
- Attribution depth — how hard you look for who profits from your reaction. Deeper attribution catches feints and manufactured urgency, but over-suspicion can dismiss a genuine signal dressed as noise.
- Refresh cadence — a one-shot snapshot versus a live board updated each cycle. A live map tracks a shifting pressure field but costs the very attention you are trying to protect.
- Granularity — mapping individual events or classes of event. Class-level entries generalize to future flare-ups; event-level entries catch the specific feint but do not transfer.
- Buffer bias — how readily an ambiguous pressure defaults to "buffer" rather than "answer." A buffer-heavy map protects deliberation but risks looking unresponsive on something that mattered.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it makes the faster actor's leverage visible: you can see on one page that most of what feels like obligation is the opponent selecting your agenda, which is the precondition for getting inside their loop rather than being trapped inside it.[n1] It is also what gives a team the standing to say "no response required" with a reason attached instead of on nerve.
Its honesty depends entirely on the beneficiary attribution. Label a genuine harm an "engagement trap" and the map becomes a license to ignore something real; the classic misuse is running it backwards — drawing the boundary to justify the inaction (or the reaction) leadership had already decided on. It also decays quickly, because a map of last week's pressures can blind you to a new source. The discipline is to re-draw it on a fixed cadence and to treat every "ignore" as a revisable hold, not a permanent ruling.

The Tempo Pressure Map realizes the orientation side of the archetype — it sees the contest before anyone acts in it:

Two events of equal severity can earn opposite verdicts — one answered, one ignored — purely on that attribution, and getting it right is the whole point of the artifact.
