Temporary Scaffold and Taper¶
Stabilization protocol — instantiates Attractor Landscape Shaping and Basin Steering
Holds a newly-captured state in place with temporary support until its own dynamics can sustain it, then withdraws the support in evidence-gated steps rather than on a calendar.
Crossing into the target basin is not the same as staying there. A freshly-captured state can rebound before its own dynamics are strong enough to hold it — the pull of the old attractor hasn't vanished, it's just been overcome for the moment. Temporary Scaffold and Taper is the mechanism for that settling phase: it props the new state up with temporary support — resources, guarantees, redundancy, facilitation — and then withdraws that support gradually, testing recovery at each step and pausing or restoring if the state slips. Its defining discipline is that withdrawal follows state evidence, not the calendar: support ends only when the state demonstrably stands on its own, and if it can't, the honest outcome is to say so rather than declare the taper complete.
Example¶
A transit agency launches a new bus route. Ridership is real but still too thin to sustain the route on fare revenue — pull the funding now and it collapses straight back to "no service," the original attractor. So the agency scaffolds: a temporary operating subsidy plus a guaranteed frequency, so riders can trust the route will actually be there when they plan around it. As ridership climbs, the subsidy is tapered in steps, and each step checks that ridership holds when support drops.
When one taper step causes a dip, the agency pauses and restores the previous level rather than pushing through on schedule, then tries again later. Support ends only when the route can absorb a normal bad week on its own. The scaffold was never the point — proving the route self-sustaining was — and tapering on evidence is what tells the difference between a durable service and a permanent subsidy.
How it works¶
- Activate support sized to hold the captured state through its most fragile early phase.
