Temptation Friction¶
Friction method — instantiates Active Goal Shielding
Raises the effort between impulse and the competing action just enough that the pull fades before it's acted on, without ever hard-blocking it.
Temptation Friction raises the effort standing between an impulse and the competing action it wants — adding steps, distance, or delay — so the pull toward a rival goal fades before it is acted on. Its distinguishing move is that it never hard-blocks: the temptation stays fully available, just costlier to reach, which is enough to defeat impulses (which are cheap and fast) while leaving genuine, considered choices intact (they will happily pay the small cost). It works by pre-arranging the environment — logging out, unlinking, relocating, unplugging — so the friction is already in place before willpower is needed, turning self-control from an in-the-moment fight into a one-time setup.
Example¶
Someone keeps impulse-buying online. A saved card and one-click checkout mean a passing want becomes a purchase in about four seconds, and their goal of paying down debt keeps losing to it. Rather than rely on resolve, they add Temptation Friction: they delete the saved cards, sign out of the shopping apps, and turn off payment autofill, so every purchase now requires digging out a physical card and typing sixteen digits.
The half-minute of nuisance is trivial for a purchase they actually mean to make — but it is fatal to the impulse ones, which depended entirely on being frictionless. Nothing is forbidden; the store is still open. The impulse simply no longer clears the newly-raised bar, and by the time the card is out of the drawer, the want has usually passed.
How it works¶
- Identify the specific competing action and the moment of impulse, then insert cost at exactly that moment — a step, a delay, a distance, a login.
- Pre-arrange the friction so it is standing before the urge arrives: the setup is done once, in a cool moment, not summoned by willpower in a hot one.
- Calibrate the cost to be small but decisive — large enough to outlast a fleeting impulse, small enough that a genuine need pays it without resentment.
- Keep the option open: friction, not prohibition. The point is to filter impulses from intentions, never to forbid the behavior outright.
Tuning parameters¶
- Friction magnitude — how much cost you add. Too little and impulses still clear it; too much and it becomes a de facto block that stops legitimate use and invites workarounds.
- Friction type — delay (a waiting period), effort (extra steps), or distance (physical separation). Delays beat impulsivity; distance beats habit; effort beats convenience.
- Placement — exactly where in the impulse-to-action chain the cost sits. The closer to the trigger, the more impulses it catches before they gather momentum.
- Durability — friction you can undo in seconds versus friction that is genuinely sticky (a card mailed to a friend). Stickier resists hot-state reversal but removes your own flexibility.
- Reversibility of setup — how easily you can dismantle the friction in a weak moment. If undoing it is as frictionless as the temptation, it will not hold.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it exploits the asymmetry that makes impulses beatable: they are strong but brief and depend on immediacy, so a small, well-placed delay defeats them without demanding ongoing willpower. Shawn Achor's "20-second rule" captures the leverage — adding roughly twenty seconds of activation energy to an unwanted default, or removing it from a wanted one, reliably shifts which behavior you fall into.[n1]
Its failure modes sit at both ends of the dial. Friction set too low is decorative; set too high it becomes a block by another name — stopping legitimate use and breeding resentment or clever workarounds. It also does nothing about interruptions that come to you (that is the inbound problem a blackout solves), and against a strong, considered pull rather than a fleeting impulse a small cost is simply paid. The classic misuse is friction you can dismantle in the very hot moment it was meant to govern — the app you re-download in ten seconds — which is friction in name only. The discipline that guards against this is to make the setup stickier than the impulse: put the undo out of easy reach so a weak moment can't reverse a strong-moment decision.
