A Third-Option Prompt is the smallest possible reopening move: a single generative trigger whose only job is to make you name a specific third thing before you are allowed to compare the two you were handed. It does not analyze why the binary was offered, and it does not decompose the problem into dimensions. It simply refuses to accept a two-item list as complete and demands at least one concrete additional candidate — a compromise, a staged path, an abstention, a reframed goal — added to the choice set. Example

The coach applies a Third-Option Prompt — not analysis, just a demand: before we weigh those two, name three things that are neither. Forced to generate, the engineer produces an internal transfer to a different team, a negotiated three-month sabbatical, and a reduced-hours arrangement that frees time for a side project. None existed in the original frame; each is now a concrete entry, not a hypothetical. The coach folds the viable ones into the choice set so the conversation is no longer "quit or suffer" but a five-way comparison. The prompt did no rhetorical diagnosis of why the frame felt binary and no constraint modeling — it only insisted that a specific third option be spoken aloud and written down, which was enough to reopen the decision.

How it works

  • Refuse the two-item list. State the rule up front: a binary is treated as an incomplete draft, not a finished set, and comparison is deferred until it is enlarged.
  • Force a concrete name. Demand at least one specific additional option — not a gesture at "other possibilities." A named option can be evaluated; a vague one cannot, and vagueness is how suppressed alternatives stay suppressed.
  • Use a generative nudge if stuck. Standard prompts break the block: both instead of either (can we do a version of A and B?), neither (what if we do nothing / not yet?), a smaller / staged / reversible version, what would we pick if these two were forbidden?
  • Fold in and re-sort. Add the concrete new options to the choice set so the decision reopens with a larger candidate list, ready for whatever comparison follows.

Tuning parameters

  • Quota — how many additional options you demand (one, three, five). A higher quota fights anchoring harder but drags in filler; a quota of three is a common sweet spot that forces past the first easy answer.
