Translation-Loss, Ambiguity, and Power-Effect Audit is the check on what a bridge does to people, not just to meaning. It walks a mapping and records the semantic residue — omissions, additions, compression, connotation shifts, changed uncertainty, category erasure — and then, crucially, the political residue: who authored the mapping, whose categories became the default, whose interpretation was excluded, what new authority the output quietly acquires, and who bears the cost of correcting it. How it works¶
- Sample high-consequence mappings. Focus the audit where distortion costs the most, not uniformly across every row.
- Trace loss. Record omissions, additions, compression, connotation shifts, changed uncertainty, and category erasure for each sampled mapping.
- Trace power. Identify who authored the mapping, whose categories are the default, whose interpretation was excluded, what authority the output acquires, and who bears correction costs.
- Recruit the affected. Interview participants who bear downstream effects — for exclusion and burden, not fluency — and protect dissent from retaliation.
- Assign disclosure and remedy. Verify that disclosed limits match reality, and attach remedies, required disclosures, or stop-use conditions to the ledger.
Tuning parameters¶
- Sampling depth — how many and which mappings are audited. Concentrating on high-consequence, irreversible mappings finds the worst harms; broad sampling costs more and can dilute focus.
- Power-lens breadth — how far the audit follows authority and burden effects (author, default frame, excluded voices, downstream cost). A wide lens catches laundering and gatekeeping; a narrow one collapses to a loss checklist.
- Affected-participant reach — how widely and independently affected parties are consulted, compensated, and protected. Broader reach detects more exclusion but risks consultation fatigue and requires real protection to avoid performative participation.
- Remedy force — whether findings yield advisory notes, blocking disclosures, or stop-use conditions. Stronger remedies protect users but slow release; advisory-only audits are easily ignored.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it surfaces the harms the other checks structurally miss: a bridge can pass round-trip and task tests and still transfer authority, erase a category, or dump correction costs on the weaker party.
