The preservation instruction requires: keep an explicit comparison marker in the target language; keep the "able to be raised" qualifier that blocks the permanence inference; and, if no clean marker exists in the target tongue, add a translator's footnote rather than deleting the boundary.[n1] The figurative force and its limit both cross the language boundary, which is exactly what a marker-blind rendering would have lost.
How it works¶
The instruction is attached to the transformation, not the text. It specifies three things: (a) a comparison marker must appear in the target-language output; (b) the source's non-transfer/boundary must survive; © a fallback — footnote or gloss — applies when the target idiom has no clean marker. It governs human and machine translation alike (as a post-edit rule or an explicit constraint in a translation prompt) and is auditable by lining source against target and confirming the marker made it across. It never designs the boundary; it only ensures the boundary that was authored upstream is not silently discarded in transit.

When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it stops the classic marker-erasure failure at the exact point it occurs — a language transform — and it protects both literary force and high-stakes precision across the boundary where most preservation rules go unenforced. Its failure mode is rigidity: forcing a marker into a language whose idiom resists it can yield stilted prose or, worse, a false-friend construction that reads oddly. And it can only preserve what was there — if the source was already unmarked, there is no boundary to carry over. The classic misuse is applying it to a source metaphor designed to fuse target and source deliberately, wrongly re-inserting a "like" that dilutes an intended identity. The guarding discipline is to preserve the source's mode rather than impose one, and to lean on fallbacks when the target idiom fights the marker.
