Trigger Removal¶
Cue-interruption method — instantiates Associative Cue Redesign
Takes the triggering cue out of the environment — removing, blocking, delaying, or decoupling it — so the old response is never started, then checks it did not just reappear elsewhere.
Trigger Removal works by subtraction. Rather than adding a better cue or asking anyone to resist, it takes the triggering signal out of the environment — removing it, hiding it, blocking it, delaying it, or decoupling it from the moment — so the old response is never set in motion. Its distinctive claim is that the cheapest way to stop an automatic behaviour is often to ensure its starting gun never fires. It targets the cue that begins the response, not the ability to act: taking the cigarette display out of sight is Trigger Removal, whereas locking the cigarettes away is a different move. And because subtraction leaves a gap, the mechanism carries a second obligation the others do not — to check that the behaviour did not simply find a new cue or route around the removal.
Example¶
For years, convenience stores kept cigarettes on a bright, backlit rack directly behind the register. The sight of the pack at the instant of paying was a dependable cue — for impulse buys and for recent quitters mid-lapse. Point-of-sale display bans, now law in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and elsewhere, require tobacco to be kept out of view, under the counter or behind plain doors. The cue is not argued with or countered; it is removed from the field of view at the exact moment it used to fire. The redesign then has to check what the removal displaced: did buyers simply ask staff (re-introducing a spoken cue), shift to another outlet, or leave the intended purchase unmade? Where the answer is "the impulse cue is gone and no worse substitute took its place," the subtraction did its job.
How it works¶
- Isolate the cue to cut. Pin down the specific signal that starts the response, distinct from the response and the wider context, so the removal is aimed rather than scorched-earth.
- Choose the form of subtraction. Remove it, mask it, physically block it, insert a delay before it can act, or decouple it from the moment it currently coincides with — whichever is feasible and proportionate.
- Check what filled the gap. Watch for the response re-emerging under a new cue, a workaround that re-creates the old one, or displaced friction — because removing a signal without a replacement path invites exactly these.
Tuning parameters¶
- Completeness of removal — from fully deleting the cue to merely dampening or delaying it. Full removal is decisive but can provoke workarounds; a delay preserves access while breaking the automaticity.
- Reversibility — how easily the cue can return. A hard removal sticks but is costly to undo if it backfires; a soft block is safer to trial.
- Scope — one instance of the cue or every place it appears. Narrow removal is quick, but the response often just relocates to an untouched instance.
- Replacement pairing — whether removal ships with a substitute response or stands alone. Pairing prevents the vacuum; standing alone is faster but likelier to rebound.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is decisiveness and durability: a cue that is genuinely gone needs no ongoing vigilance, no willpower, and no memory — this is the logic of stimulus control, bringing a behaviour under the control of its antecedent cues and then removing the cue.[n1] It is often the highest-leverage move when a single, identifiable signal drives an unwanted response.
It misleads when the removal is partial or unpaired. Cut one instance of a cue and the response migrates to another; remove a cue without offering a replacement path and the actor re-creates it or improvises a worse one; over-remove and you strip away signals people legitimately relied on, generating friction and evasion.
