Co-Presence

Core Idea

Co-presence is the relation in which two or more agents are mutually available for awareness and response within one effective interactional here-and-now. They need not share a physical room or receive identical sensory information. They must, however, be able to treat one another as presently available and to condition action on that availability with a latency appropriate to the interaction.

The concept separates co-location, simultaneity, and co-presence. Bodies can be co-located without noticing or being available to one another. Agents can act at the same clock time without reciprocal access. Conversely, mediated agents can be co-present across distance when the channel supports mutual awareness and contingent response.

Structural Signature

What It Is Not

  • Not mere co-location. Unaware strangers in the same building may share space without being co-present for the interaction at issue.
  • Not simultaneity alone. Two processes can run concurrently without mutual awareness or response.
  • Not Common Ground. Agents can be co-present while sharing few propositions; common ground is an epistemic substrate that interaction may build.
  • Not communication fidelity. A low-bandwidth channel can sustain co-presence, while a high-fidelity channel can fail if participants are inattentive or unreachable.
  • Not one-way surveillance. An observer can monitor a subject who cannot register or answer the observer; that is presence-to, not co-presence.

Broad Use

Face-to-face conversation is the canonical social case, but telephone calls, multiplayer virtual spaces, teleoperation, remote teamwork, and synchronous collaboration can instantiate the same mutual-availability relation. Multi-agent software systems are co-present in an operational sense when they share a live interaction space, observe relevant state changes, and can answer within the protocol's timing envelope.

Animal signaling and coordinated movement provide non-institutional cases: agents need not use language, but each must be available as a current source of state-dependent signal and response.

Clarity

Co-presence locates “being together” in reciprocal availability rather than meters or clock time. This clarifies why physical meetings can feel absent and remote exchanges immediate. It also distinguishes design failures: increasing resolution cannot repair missing acknowledgement, reachability, or turn-taking.

Manages Complexity

The abstraction reduces many design variables to four gates: awareness, reachability, response latency, and reciprocity. If any gate fails, the agents may be connected or co-located without being co-present.

Abstract Reasoning

The mutual-perturbation test asks whether a timely action by either agent can change the other's next available response. If the relation works in only one direction, co-presence is absent or asymmetric. The latency test is interaction-relative: a delay tolerable in correspondence may destroy co-presence in surgery or joint control.

The prime predicts that extra channel capacity has diminishing value after the signals required for awareness and contingent response are reliable. Beyond that point, attention and interaction practice dominate felt or operational presence.

Knowledge Transfer

Remote-work design, multiplayer protocols, telehealth, animal coordination, and multi-agent control share the same questions: can participants detect availability, can each answer, is delay inside the task's present, and is the relation genuinely reciprocal?

Examples

Formal/abstract

Agents \(A\) and \(B\) are co-present for task \(T\) when each can observe a task-relevant signal from the other and produce a contingent response within latency bound \(\Delta_T\). Removing either directed path breaks reciprocity.

Applied/industry

Two remote operators share a live control surface. Cursor position, acknowledgement, and voice let each register the other's attention and adapt before committing a command. A recorded video of one operator provides information but not co-presence because no reciprocal response path exists.

Structural Tensions

T1: Physical proximity versus interactional availability. Space is a common implementation of co-presence, not its definition.

T2: Rich cues versus reliable reciprocity. More cues can help, but a sparse two-way channel can outperform a rich one-way channel.

T3: Tight latency versus reflection. Faster response strengthens the shared present but can reduce deliberation and increase interruption.

Structural–Framed Character

Co-presence is mixed-structural. Its vocabulary comes from interaction theory, yet its defining relation—mutual state-sensitive availability inside a latency bound—can be specified without a human institution.

Substrate Independence

Physical space, audio, text, avatars, sensors, and protocol messages can all implement mutual availability. The realization differs; the reciprocal relation does not.

Not to Be Confused With

Social Presence is the computer-mediated-communication specialization focused on the felt presence of another actor through a medium and its design levers.

Common Ground is mutually recognized propositional content. It can be built under co-presence but is not required at the outset.
