Core Idea

Expectation violation occurs when an active prediction, script, schema, or convention specifies what should happen and a realized event is incompatible enough to trigger surprise, reorientation, processing cost, or repair. The response makes the previously tacit expectation diagnostically visible. There is an active anticipatory model, a comparable realization, a mismatch above a salience threshold, and an operational response. Novelty alone is insufficient; something expected must be breached.

Broad Use

Music, narrative, user interfaces, social scripts, anomaly detection, and perception preserve prediction–breach–response roles. Human surprise is one realization, not the entire structure.

Clarity

Baseline deviation needs only departure from a reference. Prediction error is a model-generated residual used for updating, routing, or diagnosis and need not be experientially surprising. Reward prediction error adds value learning. Tension-and-release adds deliberate buildup and resolution.

Manages Complexity

The abstraction turns scattered cases into one role-based test: identify the required elements, test their relation, and reject the classification when a constitutive commitment is missing.

Abstract Reasoning

Use the structural signature rather than the label, then challenge the nearest counterexample. A rare event that no model assigned a contrary expectation is novel but not an expectation violation.

Knowledge Transfer

Music, narrative, user interfaces, social scripts, anomaly detection, and perception preserve prediction–breach–response roles. Human surprise is one realization, not the entire structure.

Example

A case qualifies only when the definition and every load-bearing role remain present. A rare event that no model assigned a contrary expectation is novel but not an expectation violation.

Parents (1) — more general patterns this builds on

  • Expectation Violation is a kind of Baseline Deviation Prime

Expectation violation is baseline deviation specialized to an active predictive reference and a registered violation response.

Children (1) — more specific cases that build on this

  • Syncopation Domain-specific is a decomposition of Expectation Violation

Syncopation is the metric-substrate form in which an expected accent position is displaced and registered against the maintained prediction.

Not to Be Confused With

Baseline deviation needs only departure from a reference. Prediction error is a model-generated residual used for updating, routing, or diagnosis and need not be experientially surprising. Reward prediction error adds value learning. Tension-and-release adds deliberate buildup and resolution.
