Ostensive definition¶
Core Idea¶
Ostensive definition is treated as a Prime because its defining organization travels literally across unrelated substrates: An ostensive definition establishes a term's intended reference by directing attention to one or more presented examples while relying on context to indicate which feature, object, or kind is being named. The home literature supplies the discovery vocabulary, but the identity does not depend on one material, institution, discipline, or notation. An ostensive definition conveys the meaning of a term by pointing out examples.
The constitutive relation joins a learner or interpreter lacking the target association, a sign or term whose reference is to be established, and one or more perceptually or operationally presented cases. It is completed by an act of directing attention, while context that disambiguates the intended feature controls admissible interpretation and successful uptake shown by later recognition or use supplies an observable completion or collapse test. This type of definition is often used where the term is difficult to define verbally, either because the words will not be understood (as with children and new speakers of a language) or because of the nature of the term (such as colors or sensations). The node therefore names a reusable reasoning operator rather than an article topic, famous example, or loose family resemblance.
Its immediate genus is Representation, but the differentia matters. Ostensive definition adds this narrower invariant: An ostensive definition establishes a term's intended reference by directing attention to one or more presented examples while relying on context to indicate which feature, object, or kind is being named. A case can instantiate the parent without satisfying the complete role structure above. It is usually accompanied with a gesture pointing to the object serving as an example, and for this reason is also often referred to as "definition by pointing". This asymmetry prevents the new node from duplicating its parent while keeping its cross-domain skeleton explicit.
A positive instance must bind every role to a concrete occupant and state the conditions governing the relation. A negative instance can share vocabulary, purpose, or output yet fail because one constitutive link is absent. This counterfactual test makes Ostensive definition independently computable: remove an act of directing attention, and the proposed case must either collapse into a neighboring identity or cease to qualify.

Structural Signature¶
Sig role-phrases:

If successful uptake shown by later recognition or use is unavailable or the relation among the other roles cannot be established, the label is only analogy or topical resemblance.
What It Is Not¶
- Not verbal definition. specifies meaning propositionally rather than through presented cases The tell is whether the full Ostensive definition signature, rather than a shared outcome or word, is present.
- Not example. may illustrate an already understood class without establishing a term's reference The tell is whether the full Ostensive definition signature, rather than a shared outcome or word, is present.
- Not demonstration. shows how something works but need not pair the showing with a term The tell is whether the full Ostensive definition signature, rather than a shared outcome or word, is present.
- Not pointing. directs attention but may lack semantic intent or uptake conditions The tell is whether the full Ostensive definition signature, rather than a shared outcome or word, is present.
- Not classification. assigns cases to a class after the class is already defined The tell is whether the full Ostensive definition signature, rather than a shared outcome or word, is present.
Broad Use¶
- language learning. A speaker points to red samples while introducing the color word. The use is literal when all signature roles can be assigned and the collapse condition remains testable.
- interface instruction. A tutorial highlights a control while naming its function. The use is literal when all signature roles can be assigned and the collapse condition remains testable.
- field training. An expert indicates specimens that instantiate a taxon. The use is literal when all signature roles can be assigned and the collapse condition remains testable.
- craft apprenticeship. A teacher demonstrates the movement meant by a technical term. The use is literal when all signature roles can be assigned and the collapse condition remains testable.
- machine learning. Labeled exemplars associate a class symbol with observable instances. The use is literal when all signature roles can be assigned and the collapse condition remains testable.
- law and standards. Exhibits fix the intended scope of a contested descriptive term. The use is literal when all signature roles can be assigned and the collapse condition remains testable.
Clarity¶
A clear claim about Ostensive definition states the carrier, each role, the operative criterion, and the observation or derivation that warrants classification. The minimal statement is An ostensive definition establishes a term's intended reference by directing attention to one or more presented examples while relying on context to indicate which feature, object, or kind is being named.. It must not substitute an example for a definition, a favorable outcome for the constitutive relation, or historical usage for a present criterion. Overview An ostensive definition assumes the questioner has sufficient understanding to recognize the type of information being given. Ambiguous cases should identify the competing neighbor and the single fact that would discriminate them.
Manages Complexity¶
Ostensive definition compresses a large variety of cases into the stable relationship among a learner or interpreter lacking the target association, a sign or term whose reference is to be established, one or more perceptually or operationally presented cases, an act of directing attention. That compression lets investigators compare substrates without importing every local detail. Ludwig Wittgenstein writes: So one might say: the ostensive definition explains the use—the meaning—of the word when the overall role of the word in language is clear. The compression is intentionally lossy: local mechanisms, values, measurement conventions, and institutional rules remain outside the Prime unless they change the signature. Complexity is managed by exposing those omitted parameters as qualifications rather than silently treating one implementation as universal.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Fix the claim. State
An ostensive definition establishes a term's intended reference by directing attention to one or more presented examples while relying on context to indicate which feature, object, or kind is being named.without relying on the candidate's name as its own evidence. - Bind the roles. Identify a learner or interpreter lacking the target association, a sign or term whose reference is to be established, and one or more perceptually or operationally presented cases in the case.
- Establish operation. Show how an act of directing attention changes, constrains, or completes the relation.
- Control context. Declare the convention or boundary represented by context that disambiguates the intended feature.
- Demand evidence. Use successful uptake shown by later recognition or use to distinguish an instance from a plausible description.
- Run neighbor tests. Compare the case with verbal definition, example, demonstration.
- Run the collapse test. Remove an act of directing attention; if the label remains equally apt, the asserted differentia was not doing identity work.
- Transfer only the invariant. Change material, actors, scale, and notation while preserving the typed relation; otherwise mark the comparison as analogy.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Literal transfer rule. Ostensive definition transfers when a receiving case supplies literal occupants for every signature role and preserves An ostensive definition establishes a term's intended reference by directing attention to one or more presented examples while relying on context to indicate which feature, object, or kind is being named.. Material resemblance is unnecessary; structural role preservation is sufficient. Conversely, shared language or outcome is insufficient when the operative relation changes.
Transfer surface — language learning. A speaker points to red samples while introducing the color word. Map a learner or interpreter lacking the target association to the local carrier, a sign or term whose reference is to be established to its declared object or standard, and an act of directing attention to the local operation. The transfer fails if successful uptake shown by later recognition or use cannot be observed or justified.

Map a learner or interpreter lacking the target association to the local carrier, a sign or term whose reference is to be established to its declared object or standard, and an act of directing attention to the local operation. The transfer fails if successful uptake shown by later recognition or use cannot be observed or justified.
Transfer surface — field training. An expert indicates specimens that instantiate a taxon. Map a learner or interpreter lacking the target association to the local carrier, a sign or term whose reference is to be established to its declared object or standard, and an act of directing attention to the local operation. The transfer fails if successful uptake shown by later recognition or use cannot be observed or justified.
Transfer surface — craft apprenticeship. A teacher demonstrates the movement meant by a technical term. Map a learner or interpreter lacking the target association to the local carrier, a sign or term whose reference is to be established to its declared object or standard, and an act of directing attention to the local operation. The transfer fails if successful uptake shown by later recognition or use cannot be observed or justified.
Reduction rule. When the specialist differentia does not survive, reduce the claim to Representation rather than retaining the name Ostensive definition. This rule preserves useful structural transfer while preventing metaphorical inflation. Thus if I know that someone means to explain a colour-word to me the ostensive definition "That is called 'sepia' " will help me to understand the word....
Examples¶
Canonical¶
A teacher presents several red objects of different shapes, points to the shared color, and says the new term. Later the learner applies the word to a red object never shown. The presentation, attentional cue, contextual contrast, and successful generalization jointly establish an ostensive definition; pointing to one apple without controlling whether color, shape, fruit, or ownership is intended does not.
Mapped back: carrier → a learner or interpreter lacking the target association; relation → a sign or term whose reference is to be established; operation → an act of directing attention; recognition → successful uptake shown by later recognition or use.
Applied / In Practice¶
A software tutorial darkens the screen except for one icon, names the command, demonstrates the resulting action, and then asks the user to invoke the command in a new file. Highlighting supplies the attentional direction, the demonstration constrains the intended feature, and transfer to the new file evidences uptake. A decorative animation that draws attention without fixing reference is not an ostensive definition.
Mapped back: changed substrate → the applied setting; invariant → An ostensive definition establishes a term's intended reference by directing attention to one or more presented examples while relying on context to indicate which feature, object, or kind is being named; boundary → removal of an act of directing attention collapses the classification.

Structural–Framed Character¶
Ostensive definition is a hybrid near the middle of the structural–framed spectrum. Its structural part is the pairing of a term with presented cases, with context narrowing which feature is meant and later recognition testing success. The framed layer is the practice of teaching a term: a learner, a sign whose reference is to be fixed, and an act of directing attention.
It brings part of the vocabulary of the philosophy of language, such as term, reference, and uptake. It is evaluatively neutral, since fixing reference by example is neither good nor bad. Its origin in language learning ties it partly to linguistic convention. It cannot be defined without a term, a learner, and an act of pointing, so it sits at the framed pole on that diagnostic. Applying it beyond language partly recasts other processes as definition: learning from labeled examples in machine learning is an arguable extension rather than a clear case. Pointing to a red object to teach a color word, showing a new speaker several examples of a kind, and indicating a feature that is hard to define verbally all rely on context to disambiguate what is being named. The diagnostics therefore place it near the middle, on the mixed-framed side.
Substrate Independence¶
The substrate test replaces the original carrier with a case from each of these unrelated settings: language learning, interface instruction, field training, craft apprenticeship, machine learning. In each replacement, a learner or interpreter lacking the target association, a sign or term whose reference is to be established, one or more perceptually or operationally presented cases, and an act of directing attention remain assignable without metaphor. The evidence convention changes, but the collapse condition remains the loss of successful uptake shown by later recognition or use.
The test also has a negative side. If a receiving domain can preserve only a superficial shape, an emotional association, or the same English word, then Ostensive definition has not traveled. The correct residual is Representation, a neighboring Prime, or an explicitly marked analogy. This bidirectional test supports Prime status while keeping scope disciplined.

Source boundary. The limitations of ostensive definition are exploited in a famous argument from Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations (which deal primarily with the philosophy of language), the private language argument, in which he asks if it is possible to have a private language that no one else can understand. John Passmore states that the term was first defined by the British logician William Ernest Johnson (1858–1931): "His neologisms, as rarely happens, have won wide acceptance: such phrases as "ostensive definition", such contrasts as those between ... "determinates" and "determinables", "continuants" and "occurrents", are now familiar in philosophical literature" (Passmore 1966, p.
