Reference-Point Dependence¶
Core Idea¶
Reference-point dependence evaluates an outcome by its signed change from a movable reference state rather than only by its absolute level. Relocating the reference can therefore change whether the same outcome is classified or experienced as gain, loss, improvement, or deterioration. An outcome magnitude, a reference state, a difference operation, a value or response function over that difference, and the possibility of reference movement are required. Asymmetry between gains and losses is common but not necessary to the broader identity.
Broad Use¶
Human choice, perception, control systems, performance measurement, finance, and adaptation-level models preserve outcome–reference–signed-change roles. The response need not be conscious.
Clarity¶
Baseline deviation records departure without requiring valuation. Anchoring is insufficient adjustment from a starting value. Context-dependent preference changes option ordering with menus or comparators. Loss aversion is a narrower asymmetric valuation around the reference.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction turns scattered cases into one role-based test: identify the required elements, test their relation, and reject the classification when a constitutive commitment is missing.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Use the structural signature rather than the label, then challenge the nearest counterexample. A sensor reporting an absolute temperature without comparison to a setpoint does not exhibit reference-point dependence.

Example¶
