Core Idea

Suspension of judgment is the cross-domain epistemic state in which a reasoner keeps a proposition or verdict open rather than affirming or denying it, pending adequate evidence, clarification or an authorized later decision. The abstraction is not exhausted by its familiar source-domain notation. Its autonomous core is threshold-governed noncommitment, distinct from ignorance, indecision without a standard, permanent refusal or procedural nullification of a prior judgment.

The operative mechanism is this: A conclusion is identified, the current evidence is compared with a declared commitment threshold and, when support remains inadequate or balanced, the reasoner records noncommitment while preserving conditions for later reassessment. Wait and See

Sometimes a referee can't tell if the ball went in, so she says, 'Wait — let's watch the replay.' She doesn't say yes, and she doesn't say no. She waits until she can see well enough to decide.

Not Yes, Not No, Not Yet

Suspension of Judgment means deciding, on purpose, not to say yes or no to something yet, because you don't have enough evidence. It's not the same as not knowing anything, and it's not just being unable to make up your mind. You have a question, you have a sense of how much proof you'd need, and right now you don't have it. So you keep the question open and plan to decide later when more clues come in. A referee checking the video replay before calling the play is doing this.

Threshold-Based Noncommitment

Suspension of Judgment is a deliberate state of neither affirming nor denying a claim, because the evidence doesn't yet meet the standard needed to commit. It requires a specific question, at least two possible answers, a threshold for how much support is enough, current evidence that falls short (or is evenly balanced), and a state that stays open to revision. That makes it different from simple ignorance (you may know a lot and still be below the threshold), from indecision (which has no clear standard), from permanently refusing to answer, and from a court canceling an earlier verdict. Juries waiting for more testimony, scientists saying 'the data are inconclusive', and a computer program marking a value as 'unknown' until more input arrives all show the same structure.

Broad Use
