Record a phenomenon together with the context envelope — prior states, roles, conventions, stakes — that makes its meaning recoverable downstream, rather than only the bare surface event. The same physical motion can be a tic, a wink, or a parody; a thin record captures the motion, a thick record captures which.

The Whole Story Around It
If you just write down 'he closed one eye,' you don't really know what happened — was it a wink to a friend, dust in his eye, or a silly joke? You have to write down the *whole story around it* so someone later can tell what it really meant. The same little movement can mean totally different things.
What It Really Meant
Thick Description is recording not just *what happened* but all the surrounding stuff that makes its *meaning* clear. Take a tiny action: someone shuts one eye. That same motion could be a nervous twitch, a secret signal to a friend, a joke imitating a wink, or a card-player's tell. If you only write 'he shut one eye,' that's a *thin* record — you can count it but you can't tell what it meant. A *thick* record adds who did it, to whom, in what situation, and what was going on — so later, someone can figure out which kind of motion it really was. Neither is always better; they answer different questions, but you can't swap one for the other.
Context That Carries Meaning
Thick Description is recording a phenomenon *together with the surrounding context that makes its meaning recoverable*, instead of just the bare physical act. The load-bearing idea is that the act and its interpretation are *different objects*: you can't rebuild the meaning from the surface motion alone without the connective tissue — prior states, who the participants are, the conventions in force, who's watching, what's at stake. The classic example: a contracting eyelid could be a tic, a conspiratorial signal, a parody of a wink, a rehearsed stage wink, or a poker tell. A *thin* record captures the motion; a *thick* record captures which kind of motion, by whom, to whom, in what game. The pattern names a *resolution choice* in capturing evidence: how much context must travel with the event for later interpretation to stay possible. Thick sets that resolution where the meaning-determining distinctions survive; thin sets it lower, enough for counting but not interpreting. Neither is better in the abstract — they answer different questions — but they aren't substitutes, and treating one as the other is a recurring mistake.

Its dual is operational or behaviourist recording: strip the event to its surface, assume context is either recoverable or unnecessary, and optimise for comparability and aggregation. The structural skill is choosing the resolution deliberately rather than by default.
Broad Use¶
- Ethnography: a ritual contest is unreadable without the stakes, rivalries, and conventions that make it the act it is.
- Incident post-mortems: record the operator's mental model, fatigue, and on-call context, not just the failure steps.
- Legal case-writing: thick-describe facts and conventions so later courts recognise when "the same kind of case" recurs.
- Literary criticism: recover authorial meaning by preserving generic, intertextual, and biographical context.
- UX research: record what users thought they were doing and had just tried, not only what they did.
- Clinical case-writing: reconstruct a patient's circumstances and trajectory so the next reader can pattern-match.
Clarity¶
Replaces "how much was recorded?" with "what kind of resolution does the record support?", and names three failures — context starvation, spurious thickness (ornament without load-bearing distinctions), and misframed thickness (the wrong context preserved).
Manages Complexity¶
Collapses ethnography, incident review, and clinical write-ups onto one question — what context must travel with the focal event for its meaning to be recoverable? — and reframes rigour as a match between resolution and downstream need.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Trains the reasoner to specify the interpretive yield first, then preserve the meaning-determining distinctions, separating ornament from structure via the event-disambiguation test.

Example¶
A strong post-mortem of an engineer's bad command records fatigue at hour ten, a misleading confirmation dialog, and a stale dashboard — so a later analyst can tell whether it was a tooling-design failure, a fatigue failure, or a knowledge gap; the bare-fact timeline supports blame but not learning.

- Thick Description is not Pragmatics because pragmatics is the theory that context completes meaning whereas thick description is the practical recording move of capturing that context so it travels with the focal event.
