Unfalsifiability¶
Core Idea¶
Unfalsifiability is the property of a claim for which no admissible observation can force rejection because the claim forbids no possible outcome or can revise its own refutation conditions after adverse evidence. Every result is made compatible with survival. A claim purports to describe or explain; an evidence domain is relevant; admissibility and rejection rules are absent, empty, or movable; and adverse observations leave the claim untouched. Logical unfalsifiability and immunization by auxiliary revisions should be distinguished.
Broad Use¶
Science, policy, management, conspiracy narratives, forecasting, auditing, and model evaluation preserve claim–admissible-observation–rejection-condition roles. The abstraction is epistemically framed but portable.
Clarity¶
A currently untested claim can still state what would refute it. Underdetermination allows several theories to fit finite evidence but need not make all observations compatible. Moving goalposts is one conversational mechanism for preserving an unfalsifiable position.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction turns scattered cases into one role-based test: identify the required elements, test their relation, and reject the classification when a constitutive commitment is missing.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Use the structural signature rather than the label, then challenge the nearest counterexample. A theory that survives a failed prediction because an independently testable instrument fault is demonstrated is not thereby unfalsifiable.

Example¶
