Autopoietic Self Maintenance

Design a system so it continually reproduces the components, practices, or capacities needed to maintain its identity.

The Diagnostic Story

Symptom: The system keeps producing value, but the capacities that make that production possible are being quietly consumed. Key people burn out, norms erode, institutional memory lives in a few individuals, and newcomers arrive but never fully acquire the judgment they need. From the outside, everything looks stable; from the inside, the conditions for the next cycle are already degraded. The system can survive one disruption, but it cannot regenerate itself across many.

Pivot: Identify explicitly which components and capacities must be reproduced — roles, norms, skills, memory, trust — and build feedback-linked renewal loops that regenerate them continuously rather than waiting for visible breakdown. Maintain the boundary criteria that preserve identity without letting renewal become either too closed to adapt or too open to hold together.

Resolution: The system becomes viable across turnover, shocks, and generational change because renewal is built into its operation, not bolted on after a crisis. Living practices, obligations, and memory are transmitted and updated, not silently allowed to decay. Continuity and adaptation reinforce each other instead of trading off.

  • Norm Maintenance Ritual: Periodically re-enacts, examines, and re-commits to the working norms a system relies on, surfacing where practice has quietly drifted so coordination rules stay alive instead of decaying into ignored slogans.
  • Retrospective-to-Training Loop: Converts what operation teaches — incidents, near-misses, hard-won lessons — into updated training, checklists, and playbooks, so the system renews its future capability from its own experience.
