Conceptual Blending For Innovation¶
Combine elements from distinct conceptual spaces to create a new solution space with emergent possibilities.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: Every ideation session produces variations on the same idea — the team is genuinely trying to be creative but the options all share the same underlying logic, vocabulary, and constraints. When cross-domain inspiration is brought in, it stays as a metaphor rather than becoming structure, and hybrid proposals end up as feature lists with no coherent operating logic behind them.
Pivot: Treat combination as a construction task: select two or more distinct conceptual spaces, map what each contributes in terms of roles, rules, and relationships, surface the mismatches, and selectively project elements into a new blended space that has emergent structure neither input contained alone. Test whether the blend is coherent and useful before communicating it.
Resolution: New solution options become available beyond the original frame because the blend has its own internal logic, not just a list of borrowed parts. Cross-domain borrowing becomes more disciplined, misleading analogies are caught earlier, and participants can explain what is genuinely new and why it should work.
Reach for this when you hear…¶
[product design] “We called it a marketplace meets a subscription, but when engineers asked how pricing, inventory, and discovery actually work together, nobody had a consistent answer.”
[legal services] “We borrowed the triage model from emergency medicine, but we never asked which constraints from that model have to travel with it or it won't actually work in our intake process.”
[scientific research] “The analogy to immune memory was exciting in the grant proposal, but now we need to figure out which parts of the analogy are structurally real and which parts are just evocative language.”
