Clarify a concept, option, signal, or identity by making its differences from nearby alternatives explicit.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: Two things are repeatedly confused because their differences, though real, are not organized anywhere people can see them. Meetings circle because options are described with incompatible metrics or narratives. A warning is missed because it looks too much like routine information. Stakeholders argue from labels instead of criteria, and no one can agree on what actually separates the two.
Pivot: Identify the confusable alternatives, choose contrast dimensions that are task-relevant rather than merely vivid, name the distinguishing features in a shared frame, and connect the clarified contrast to the decision, classification, or learning objective that depends on it.
Resolution: Ambiguity among similar concepts shrinks because the distinction is now visible on a shared dimension. Mistaken substitutions decrease, classification becomes more consistent, and attention shifts away from irrelevant differences toward the ones that actually change outcomes.

Diagnostic problem
Options, concepts, signals, roles, identities, explanations, or states are close enough that people confuse them, substitute one for another, or overlook their consequential differences. The problem is not simply lack of information; it is weakly organized difference. The relevant distinction is present but not salient, not represented on a shared dimension, or not linked to the action that depends on it.
What this problem means
The structural problem is weakly organized difference. People are not necessarily ignorant; they may have too many descriptions, labels, examples, or signals without a clear account of what separates one from another.
