Cross Impact Interaction Mapping¶
Map how trends, events, and uncertainties reinforce, weaken, or transform one another.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: The trend list keeps growing, but the strategic insight it produces does not. Each driver is analyzed in isolation, so the scenario narratives feel internally inconsistent — one assumption presupposes conditions that a different assumption would undermine. The strategy was surprised not by any single trend but by a combination of known drivers that nobody had examined together. Stakeholders are debating which driver is most important when the real question is which relationships among drivers are most consequential.
Pivot: Shift from listing drivers to mapping how they influence one another. Classify each interaction by type — reinforcing, dampening, enabling, blocking, transformative — and by confidence, so the map reveals which combinations create thresholds, triggers, and compound effects rather than merely adding up.
Resolution: Scenarios become more coherent because dependent assumptions and implausible combinations are identified before they reach decision makers. Monitoring priorities shift to the interactions that could most change strategic outcomes, not just the most salient individual trends. Compound risks and converging opportunities that would have been invisible in a ranked list become visible earlier.
