Dual Frame Analysis

Analyze a problem through two complementary frames so each frame's blind spots are compensated by the other.

The Diagnostic Story

Symptom: Two groups look at the same situation and reach opposite conclusions, and neither side is wrong exactly — they're each seeing a real part of the problem. Debates cycle without resolution because each argument is internally coherent under its own frame while remaining invisible to the other side. A recommendation that looks clean under one model keeps generating obvious objections from another angle.

Pivot: Name both frames explicitly, define what each captures and what each systematically misses, then hold the tension rather than collapsing it. The work is to compare contradictions without forcing premature resolution, then synthesize a decision view that preserves insight from both.

Resolution: Evidence that was invisible under the dominant frame becomes decision-relevant. Stakeholder disagreements become diagnosable because each side's frame is named and bounded. Actions can explain which frame governs which aspects instead of pretending one clean model covers everything.

What this problem means

The structural problem is single-frame dominance. A decision process has adopted one model, metric, story, or vantage point as if it were complete. That frame can be useful, but it makes some evidence salient and other evidence invisible. As a result, the decision can be coherent within the chosen frame and still fail in the real system.

A common sign is a recommendation that looks clean on paper but produces persistent objections, exceptions, harms, or implementation breakdowns that the dominant frame cannot explain.
