The Diagnostic Story

Symptom: Something that used to run stably has tipped: one force, flow, or pressure is now dominant, and the system is visibly off-balance. Normal operation can no longer absorb the imbalance — outputs are erratic, resources are depleted on one side, or a part of the system that used to hold steady is now continuously stressed.

Pivot: Identify the balancing variables and the viable range they need to stay within, then find which force or flow has become dominant and apply bounded counterforce — enough to restore the viable range, not so much that it overshoots, freezes adaptation, or shifts the imbalance somewhere less visible.

Resolution: The system settles back within a viable operating range without replacing one dangerous extreme with another. The cause of the original dominance is identified so adjustment can be monitored rather than continuously reapplied. Adaptive movement within that range remains possible.

What this problem means

The structural problem is dominance of one variable over the counterforces that normally keep a system workable. A service queue grows because intake overwhelms capacity. A decision system tilts because one group has voice without accountability. A budget becomes unstable because commitments exceed reliable inflows. An ecosystem degrades because an invasive pressure or missing species changes the relation among flows.

The common form is not “bad state.” It is a relation outside range. That distinction matters because the intervention should target the relation, not just the most visible symptom.
