Gestalt Grouping Design¶
Arrange information so people perceive the intended groups, relationships, boundaries, and continuities.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: People repeatedly pair a label, warning, button, or field with the wrong element, or miss a boundary that matters. Items that are unrelated get treated as linked because they share the same visual treatment or happen to be adjacent, while real relationships go unnoticed because grouping cues are too weak or inconsistent to distinguish them from background noise.
Pivot: Treat grouping as a deliberate cognitive interface between structure and perception: define the intended groups and boundaries, select grouping principles and cues, test how observers actually interpret them rather than assuming designer intent is enough, then revise misleading cues while preserving exceptions that should not be absorbed into the group.
Resolution: False associations from accidental proximity or similarity drop, and real relationships become faster to recognize. Comprehension, task completion, navigation, and safety improve where relationship perception is the bottleneck, and grouping decisions leave an explicit revision trail rather than relying on undocumented intent.

Diagnostic problem
Information, controls, objects, or spaces are perceived as belonging together, separate, continuous, complete, or hierarchical in ways that conflict with the intended structure, causing misinterpretation or misaction.
What this problem means
The structural problem is that perceived grouping can diverge from intended structure. Nearby items look related. Similar items look like members of the same category. Enclosed items look like a unit. Aligned items look sequential or comparable. A partial boundary can make a viewer infer closure. These cues operate even when no one explicitly says that the relationship exists.
This creates a tension: grouping makes complexity easier to read, but it also manufactures apparent structure. A useful grouping cue compresses attention around real relationships; a harmful cue compresses attention around false ones.
