Inertia Breaking¶
Apply enough focused impetus, friction reduction, and transition support to move a system out of a persistent current state and into a desired new trajectory.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: A change that everyone agrees makes sense repeatedly fails to start. Plans accumulate, pilots stall before scaling, and announcements produce no changed behavior. Every actor waits for more proof, more support, or someone else to go first. The first step is disproportionately hard compared to every subsequent step, and when the new path becomes inconvenient people slide back to the old one without thinking.
Pivot: Diagnose the specific inertia sources — coordination barriers, switching cost, uncertainty, missing first movers, absent reinforcement — and redesign starting conditions to remove them. Create a bounded activation trigger, provide support during early transition, and reinforce early motion until the new trajectory becomes self-sustaining.
Resolution: A stalled transition produces visible first movement and the desired path gains credibility through demonstrated progress. Switching costs and coordination barriers are lower than before, so early movers have enough support to continue rather than revert. The system develops enough momentum toward the new state that later diffusion or stabilization work becomes possible.

Diagnostic problem
A system persists in its current state even though a better, safer, more efficient, or more appropriate state is available. The persistence is produced by momentum, habit, coordination barriers, risk, sunk cost, defaults, uncertainty, installed infrastructure, approval friction, or lack of a credible first move.
What this problem means
The structural problem is state persistence. A current state continues because staying in place is easier, safer, more coordinated, or more familiar than beginning a transition. The desirable future state may have higher long-term value, but the immediate local incentives favor the old state.
Common sources of inertia include operational friction, sunk costs, procedural approvals, habit, uncertainty, fear of short-term loss, incompatible infrastructure, social identity, first-mover risk, and the absence of a clear start condition. The system may talk about change while preserving the practical arrangements that make change hard.
This is different from simple disagreement. People may agree with the change and still fail to start. It is also different from ordinary diffusion: nothing can diffuse widely if the first movement has not yet become credible.
