Periodization Frame Design¶
Segment continuous time into meaningful periods while making boundary choices and interpretive effects explicit.
The Diagnostic Story¶
Symptom: A long process or history is treated as an undifferentiated flow, so comparison and learning are impossible — or arbitrary period labels are silently organizing interpretation without anyone having chosen them. Stakeholders argue over whether a key event belongs to the old era or the new one, lessons are too broad to be useful, and names like launch phase or crisis period carry hidden assumptions about progress, decline, or inevitability that shape conclusions before analysis begins.
Pivot: Design the temporal frame explicitly: state the purpose of periodization, choose boundary criteria that are evidence-based and contestable, name the periods in a way that is accountable to those criteria, test contested edges, and record what the frame reveals and what it hides.
Resolution: Temporal structure becomes interpretable rather than assumed, and phase-specific lessons are more reliable because they are tied to the conditions that defined each phase. Continuities across boundaries remain visible, framing bias is reduced because the criteria are explicit, and the frame can be revised when a new purpose or new evidence makes a different segmentation more appropriate.
