A production signature is useful because the source often cannot help leaving traces. A device has calibration quirks, a tool has wear, a manufacturing line has tolerances, an authoring process has habits, and a model pipeline may leave statistical residue. This archetype turns those traces into governed evidence rather than impressionistic pattern matching.

Process-Imprint Source Attribution applies when the origin of an artifact, signal, text, image, sample, behavior, or record is uncertain, but the act of producing it leaves recurring regularities that can be measured across outputs. The archetype builds a candidate-source set, extracts process-linked features, tests their stability and discriminating power against controls, separates them from intentional labels or custody metadata, assigns calibrated attribution confidence, and preserves uncertainty and contestability.

This draft is distinct from provenance triangulation, which evaluates explicit records and source chains; from authentication, which verifies asserted identity or origin through a procedure; from layered record accumulation, which preserves history; and from observational equivalence resolution, which is broader discriminating-test design. Here the evidentiary center is the production imprint carried by the artifact itself.

Non-examples¶
A QR code, serial number, or visible watermark is an intentional identifier unless the question is whether the production process itself leaves an involuntary trace. A citation trail is provenance review. A single visual resemblance with no controls is not attribution. A metadata claim alone is not a production signature.
