The Diagnostic Story

Symptom: Users confuse categories that differ only in color or small labels — both channels fail in print, in low light, or for users with different color perception. Tactile or visual texture differences exist on surfaces but nobody designed them to carry meaning, so users interpret them inconsistently: sometimes signal, sometimes wear, sometimes decoration. A secondary property — uncertainty, provisional status, hazard, handling constraint — has no channel at all, and remains invisible until a mistake makes it consequential.

Pivot: Design texture as a controlled signal: define the property to encode, create a small texture vocabulary, map each texture explicitly to a meaning, test distinguishability in the actual context of use, pair with redundant cues and legends where stakes are high, and govern reproduction so the mapping stays meaningful across screen, print, physical material, and assistive contexts.
