Core Idea

What It Is Not

  • It is not the whole field of linguistic typology; many objects in that field do not satisfy its constitutive rule.
  • It is not its canonical example. In a morphologically ergative Basque clause, an intransitive S and transitive P can occur in the morphologically unmarked absolutive form, while transitive A bears ergative marking. That is an instance, not a definition.
  • It is not Ergative case. Ergative marks or licenses A in the core morphological contrast; absolutive groups S with P. They are complementary terms within the alignment rather than interchangeable names for the same form.
  • It is not an unrestricted metaphor. Absolutive can be overtly marked, zero exponence does not make a case absent, and tripartite, split, syntactically ergative, and marked-nominative systems require construction-specific analysis rather than a whole-language binary

The entry is typological and construction-specific. It does not imply that every argument labeled S or P has the same semantics, syntactic behavior, or overt marker across languages.[2]

Clarity

A clear claim names the carrier, governing rule, assumptions, and recognition test. This matters because absolutive names the S/P case in core ergative terminology but can also name an unmarked absolute or citation form in other descriptive traditions. The disciplined statement is that the object counts as Absolutive case exactly when the analysis demonstrates an S/P grouping against A in the relevant construction and identifies the form or abstract case licensed for that grouping

Identity and measurement remain separate. Corpus frequencies and surface endings are insufficient by themselves; identification requires a grammatical analysis of argument structure, paradigms, splits, zero forms, and independent syntactic diagnostics. Approximation or noisy evidence may weaken a classification without changing its definition.
