Absolutive case¶
Mark the sole argument of an intransitive clause and the patient-like argument of a transitive clause alike in an ergative-absolutive alignment, contrasting them with the transitive agent.
Core Idea¶
In the core ergative-absolutive sense, absolutive is the morphological case or unmarked form that groups S, the sole argument of an intransitive clause, with P, the patient-like argument of a transitive clause, in contrast to ergative marking on A, the transitive agent-like argument. A conventional morphological paradigm maps two syntactic-argument functions to one case form while assigning the contrasting transitive argument to ergative; inflection, clitics, zero exponence, agreement, or their combinations make the alignment observable.
Its autonomous residual is the S/P case grouping within a typed alignment analysis, not any unmarked noun form, a universal synonym for nominative or accusative, the entire ergative language type, or semantic patienthood alone.
Scope of Application¶
Absolutive case applies when the analyst can specify a language or construction with a declared alignment system, nominal or pronominal forms, and the core argument roles S, A, and P or O and establish that the analysis demonstrates an S/P grouping against A in the relevant construction and identifies the form or abstract case licensed for that grouping. The entry is typological and construction-specific. It does not imply that every argument labeled S or P has the same semantics, syntactic behavior, or overt marker across languages.
Clarity¶
A clear claim names the carrier, governing rule, assumptions, and recognition test. This matters because absolutive names the S/P case in core ergative terminology but can also name an unmarked absolute or citation form in other descriptive traditions. The disciplined statement is that the object counts as Absolutive case exactly when the analysis demonstrates an S/P grouping against A in the relevant construction and identifies the form or abstract case licensed for that grouping
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction compresses overt and zero absolutives, nominal and pronominal paradigms, split ergativity, morphological and syntactic alignment, tripartite systems, marked-nominative terminology, and language-specific case licensing into a stable carrier, rule, invariant, and failure boundary. It makes comparison tractable while retaining the variables that control validity.
Compression can hide assumptions. A responsible use therefore declares language, construction, S-A-P analysis, overt marking, zero exponence, agreement, syntactic pivot, aspect, tense, person hierarchy, clause type, citation form, and descriptive tradition and returns to the full diagnostic whenever a convention or boundary case changes.
