Allophone

One of the context-conditioned phonetic realisations of a single phoneme — predictable from environment and non-contrastive, so substituting one for another never changes which word is recognised, as decided by complementary distribution and the minimal-pair test.

The variation is predictable from environment and non-contrastive. English /p/ surfaces as aspirated [pʰ] in pin, unaspirated [p] in spin, and unreleased [p̚] in top. Complementary distribution and the minimal-pair test settle allophone versus separate-phoneme status.

Scope of Application

The allophone travels only where phonetic substance is parsed by a speech community's contrast system — its force rests on the minimal-pair diagnostic, which has no purchase off that substrate.
