Apostrophe (figure of speech)¶
A rhetorical turn in which a speaker breaks from the current audience to address an absent person, abstract idea or inanimate entity directly.
Core Idea¶
This apostrophe is unrelated to the punctuation mark, the addressee need not be personified in every case and direct address of an actually present interlocutor is not necessarily the figure. Discourse shifts its deictic addressee, often through a vocative, treating an unavailable or nonresponsive entity as hearable and thereby intensifying emotion, invocation or dramatic perspective. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
