Decoy Effect¶
Add a third option that is worse than one existing choice on every dimension but not strictly worse than the other, and preferences shift toward the option that dominates the decoy — even though the decoy itself is never chosen.
Core Idea¶
The decoy effect is the finding that adding an asymmetrically dominated third option — worse than one original on every relevant dimension but not strictly worse than the other — shifts preference toward the option that dominates it, violating the independence-of-irrelevant-alternatives axiom. The mechanism is comparative: the decoy is never chosen, but it installs a local comparison standard that flatters its dominating neighbor by contrast. Preferences are constructed during choice, not read off a stable utility function.
Scope of Application¶
Requires a multi-attribute chooser who registers dominance and is susceptible to contrast; it has no purchase on non-choosing systems.
- Behavioral-economics theory — the canonical regularity/IIA violation motivating context-sensitive choice models.

Clarity¶
The concept forces apart two things rational-choice theory treats as one: the option set and the preferences over it. Once a never-chosen option can move share between the remaining options, "preference" can no longer be a value read off a fixed utility function. It also separates incidental from engineered set structure, letting a practitioner audit a choice architecture for dominance relations silently promoting or demoting options.
Manages Complexity¶
Why share moves in a real choice set is otherwise open-ended — every menu and ballot could shift demand for idiosyncratic reasons. The effect isolates one structural variable, asymmetric dominance, and one two-set protocol: measure the binary split, add the decoy, measure again. Disparate cases become instances of one comparison relation, so the analyst tracks dominance geometry rather than product content and reads the shift's direction off it.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The effect licenses a diagnostic move (a share-shift toward an unchanged option signals the set's geometry, not the merits), an interventionist move (add a decoy dominated by the target to lift its share), and a boundary-drawing move (classify which comparison relation an added option installs, distinguishing it from compromise, similarity, and phantom-decoy siblings).
