Context-Dependent Preference¶
Core Idea¶
Context-dependent preference occurs when the focal options remain unchanged but their ordering changes after an unchosen comparator, menu composition, presentation, or evaluation procedure changes. Value is constructed relative to the choice context rather than residing as a fixed context-free property of each option.
The canonical identity is narrower than the phrase’s everyday use. A stable focal pair, at least two contexts, a contextual element that need not be chosen, and a preference reversal or systematic value change are required. The comparison must hold outcomes substantially fixed so altered information about the options is not mistaken for context.
Structural Signature¶
- At least two focal alternatives are available in both comparison conditions.
- Their intrinsic attributes and feasible consequences remain fixed across the contrast.
- A nonselected alternative, comparison set, presentation relation, or evaluation mode changes.
- The ordering or choice probability among the unchanged focal alternatives changes systematically.
- A context-indexed comparison process explains the shift better than a stable context-free utility ordering.
- Removing or neutralizing the context generator restores or materially reduces the ordering shift.
What It Is Not¶
Reference-point dependence evaluates change from a baseline. Framing changes presentation or interpretation. Context effects specifically show that menu or comparator structure changes preference among fixed focal options. Genuine preference learning changes the agent's information or goals.
- Preference is the broader ordering relation and need not vary with context.
- Framing can redescribe one fixed option or consequence without changing the comparison set or evaluation mode.
- Anchoring requires an initially encountered reference value that pulls a later estimate toward it.
- Salience can redirect attention without producing a preference reversal among fixed alternatives.
- State-dependent utility changes the chooser's internal state or resources rather than the external comparison context alone.

Consumer choice, animal foraging, voting, interface design, and algorithmic ranking exhibit the same relational failure of context independence. The abstraction can be stated formally beyond human psychology.
A shared label or downstream consequence is insufficient; the load-bearing roles must survive.
