Diairesis¶
A Platonic method of defining a sought kind through successive, revisable divisions of a broader kind.
Core Idea¶
Diairesis is a method of seeking a definition by dividing a broad kind into distinguishable subkinds, following the branch that contains the target, and collecting the differences that identify it.[1][2] In Plato's Sophist, the Eleatic Stranger works from art toward the angler and recapitulates the retained divisions as an account of that craft.[1] The question is not simply where to file an object: the path is meant to say what the sought kind is.
A cut is provisional. In the Statesman, a first attempt to isolate wool weaving still leaves other clothing arts with a claim to the same description.[2] The inquiry must distinguish weaving from its cooperating crafts rather than announce a definition at the first plausible branch.[2] Division can organize a proposed account without proving that the chosen differentiae necessarily belong to the target. Aristotle makes this limit explicit in Prior Analytics I.31.[3]
Structural Signature¶
Role sequence: broad kind → sought kind → discriminating cuts → retained path → proposed account → critical check.
- Broad kind. Begin with a kind that includes the target, such as art or a class of productive arts.[1][2] Without a shared starting kind, a list of unrelated traits has no division to perform.[1][2]
- Sought kind. Name what the inquiry is trying to define. This target determines which branch the inquiry follows; an untargeted inventory of every branch has a different aim.
- Discriminating cuts. Divide the current kind by differences that could separate the target from neighbors. Two-way cuts are prominent in the dialogues, but the method is not an axiom that every adequate division must have exactly two branches.[1][2][4] The Statesman later asks for a division appropriate to the parts under investigation.[2][4]
- Retained path. Preserve the successive differences on the branch containing the target. The angler example makes this path explicit.[1]
- Proposed account. Combine the retained differences into a candidate definition. A branching picture alone does not yet say which account succeeds.
- Critical check. Ask whether the account distinguishes the target from adjacent kinds. If carding or spinning still satisfies a proposed definition of weaving, the cut has stopped too soon.[2]
The recognition test asks for an identifiable target, a starting kind, successive discriminating divisions, a traceable retained path, and a resulting account that can be challenged. Omitting the target or the definitional aim leaves classification or partitioning, rather than this particular dialectical procedure.
What It Is Not¶
It is not every binary distinction. A single yes/no sorting rule can place an item in a class without giving a genus-and-differences account of what the sought kind is. Diairesis uses a sequence of cuts as a means of definition, and the adequacy of those cuts remains open to examination.
It is not a guarantee that the first path supplies a unique essence. The Sophist first uses the comparatively simple angler as a model, then develops several accounts of the sophist.[1][4] The Statesman explicitly reopens an overbroad weaving account.[2] Nor is division by itself a demonstration: Aristotle objects that choosing a branch can assume the very predicate that a proof must establish.[3]
Scope of Application¶
The clearest literal habitat here is Platonic dialectic: a dialogue seeks a definition of a craft or kind by successive divisions and tests the resulting account.[1][2] The angler in the Sophist and weaving in the Statesman are worked examples with different targets and different difficulties.[1][2] Weaving serves the latter dialogue as a paradigm for the further inquiry into statecraft; defining weaving is not already defining the statesman.[2][4]
The method can also be discussed critically within ancient logic, as in Aristotle's objection to treating division as proof.[3] Claims that particular later biological, medical, philosophical-school, or medieval practices instantiate the same method require those particular sources to be checked. The frozen discovery page lists many such histories, but they do not enlarge the evidential scope of this entry.
Clarity¶
The method separates three things often conflated: a Cut that partitions a broad kind, a Path that follows the sought kind through several cuts, and a definition proposed from the retained differences. The distinction explains why reaching “clothing art” is not enough to identify weaving: several neighboring arts fit that description.[2]
It also separates a proposed definition from a proof. The path makes a candidate account intelligible; it does not establish each chosen predicate merely by being drawn as a branch.[3]
Manages Complexity¶
A domain of related crafts may have many similarities, auxiliary activities, and competing boundaries. Diairesis compresses this field into a sequence of questions: What is the encompassing kind? Which difference separates the target at this stage? Which alternatives remain after the cut? The angler example makes a long descriptive inventory manageable as a retained path.[1]
The compression has a cost. Discarding branches too quickly can hide neighbors that still satisfy the proposed description. The weaving correction shows why a compact path must preserve the possibility of reopening a cut.[2]
Abstract Reasoning¶
From an attempted definition, one can work backward: identify its broad genus, list the differences used to reach the target, and test each neighboring kind against the account. If a neighboring kind also fits, seek a further difference or revise the previous cut. This is the reasoning made visible when the Statesman refuses to stop at the shared clothing arts.[2]
One cannot infer truth from the diagram alone. Aristotle's criticism gives a separate question for each step: has membership in this branch been established, or merely selected for the sake of the proposed definition?[3]
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within the dialogues, the procedure transfers from the easier angler to harder targets.[1][4] The target, vocabulary, and particular divisions change; the roles of encompassing kind, retained branch, and proposed account remain recognizable. The Sophist explicitly introduces angling as a model for the more difficult search for the sophist.[1][4]
A modern decision tree or a biological taxonomy can resemble this skeleton, but resemblance alone does not establish the same ancient definitional practice. Literal transfer requires a target-directed genus division whose differences yield a proposed account and whose adequacy is tested. This entry claims that method in its source-worked philosophical setting; wider historical uptake remains a research question.
Examples¶
Canonical: defining the angler in the Sophist¶
The Stranger begins with art or expertise, distinguishes acquiring from making, follows hunting into the water-animal branch, and eventually differentiates the use of a hook drawn upward.[1] He gathers the retained route into an account of the angler.[1] The precise translated terms matter less to the structure than the fact that each cut narrows the same sought craft.
Mapped back: Art is the broad kind; angling is the target; acquisition, hunting, fishing and the hook's manner of use are discriminating cuts; their retained sequence is the path; the resulting description is the proposed account.[1] A critical check asks whether another fishing craft still satisfies that account; the source-worked easy paradigm does not record a failed first cut. The example teaches a procedure without guaranteeing that every later target will yield an equally simple answer.
Applied within the dialogue: correcting the weaving division in the Statesman¶
The Stranger approaches wool weaving through making and protecting, but the preliminary account of clothing production includes other contributors to garments.[2] Carding, spinning, tool-making and repair must be distinguished from the craft that interlaces warp and woof.[2] The overbroad first result is part of the worked example, not an adequate final definition.
Mapped back: Productive and protective arts supply the broad kind; weaving is the target; garment and wool-working cuts initially trace a path but leave rivals; the further separation of principal from assisting arts and of combining from separating activities refines the proposed account.[2] The critical check is whether neighboring clothing arts still fit.[2] This is a source-worked philosophical example, not an independently observed textile workshop protocol.
Structural Tensions¶
-
Short path versus adequate discrimination. A clean sequence is easy to state, but stopping at a shared genus can misidentify the target. More cuts cost simplicity and may expose a mistaken earlier branch.[2] Diagnostic: Which neighboring kinds still satisfy the account?
-
Orderly dichotomy versus appropriate articulation. Two-way division is tractable, yet a rigid cut may group together cooperating arts that need distinct treatment.[2][4] Diagnostic: Does the division follow the relevant differences in this case, or merely an easy binary?
-
Definition-seeking versus proof. A retained route proposes what the target is; selecting its branch does not demonstrate that the target necessarily has every selected predicate.[3] On this analysis, obtaining independent grounds requires additional argument. Diagnostic: What warrants each branch membership apart from the drawn division?
Structural–Framed Character¶
Diairesis has a formal-looking skeleton of recursive division, but its named work is framed by ancient dialectical inquiry into kinds and definitions. Its characteristic question is whether the retained differences produce an adequate account of a sought kind, not whether an item is efficiently assigned a label. The sources are philosophical demonstrations and criticism; the two worked craft cases are constructed examples within dialogues, not records of an independently measured procedure.[1][2][3]
The method is presented and examined in philosophical dialogues rather than issued as an institutional rule. A human inquirer chooses the target and each cut, then judges whether the resulting account actually separates the target from its neighbors; the formal shape does not make those choices automatically valid. Its adequacy is an epistemic judgment rather than a preference for one social outcome. A generic tree can be recognized elsewhere, but importing this named practice requires the definitional purpose and critical test. Its character: a structurally explicit but domain-framed philosophical method, whose portable branching shape alone does not warrant promotion to a Prime.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
The structural core is iterative partition, target tracking, and revision when a proposed boundary fails. This skeleton helps compare the angler and weaving examples. The constitutive domain content is genus-and-difference definition in Platonic dialectic: the path is supposed to articulate what a kind is. Remove that aim and the same branching shape could be a file directory, a decision tree, or a casual sorting exercise without being diairesis.
This is therefore a domain-specific entry. Its examples establish repeatability across unlike philosophical cases, not independently observed transfer across unlike fields. Whether a wider Prime for recursive target-guided definition exists is an open future-Prime question. It would need independent cross-domain instances with the same roles and failure test, rather than analogies inferred from diagram shape; this entry asserts no such parent.
Instantiates / Related Primes¶
The live Classification Prime concerns rule-guided assignment of entities to discrete categories. Diairesis shares a concern with explicit differences and category structure, so Classification is a meaningful neighbor. Its present live identity emphasizes assigning entities to categories; diairesis instead seeks a definition by dividing a genus. Classification is not a necessary parent of this kind-definition method. The structural alternative Partition requires disjoint and exhaustive blocks that are not established for every provisional cut. No strict parent edge is recorded.
Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Diairesis sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (96th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.

Not to Be Confused With¶
-
A one-step binary classifier: a two-way assignment need not trace a target through successive genus divisions or yield a definition.
-
A complete taxonomy: diairesis may leave discarded branches largely unexplored while pursuing one target.
-
A deductive proof of essence: the chosen branch can beg what must be independently established.[3]
-
The final definition of statecraft: the weaving division is a paradigm used in that further investigation.[2][4]
