Core Idea

An explicature is the truth-evaluable proposition explicitly communicated by an utterance after linguistically constrained contextual enrichment such as reference assignment, disambiguation, saturation, and pragmatic development, contrasted with implicature.

We aren't there yet enriches there to the mutually salient destination and now to the utterance time. We've passed Chicago may imply substantial progress without explicitly stating distance remaining.

Scope of Application

  • Pragmatics. Models explicit communication.
  • Semantics. Connects sentence form to truth conditions.
  • Discourse analysis. Resolves reference and ellipsis.
  • Language philosophy. Studies saying versus implicating.

Clarity

Include contextually enriched propositions closely developed from decoded utterance form and used for its truth conditions. Exclude conversational implicatures, presuppositions treated indiscriminately, arbitrary background inference, and literal strings with unresolved indexicals. Inclusion test: Include contextually enriched propositions closely developed from decoded utterance form and used for its truth conditions. Exclusion test: Exclude conversational implicatures, presuppositions treated indiscriminately, arbitrary background inference, and literal strings with unresolved indexicals. Nearest boundary: An implicature may be strongly intended but remains outside what the utterance explicitly says. Exit condition: The category ends when inferred content is not a development of linguistic form. Common misclassifications: It is not the bare decoded sentence. It is not every contextual inference. It is not conversational implicature. It is not presupposition by definition. Nearest named distinctions: Implicature: Conveyed but not explicitly said. Literal meaning: Often underdetermines a proposition. Presupposition: Background commitment with different projection. Entailment: A logical relation rather than enrichment process.

Manages Complexity

Context completes explicit content but cannot license any convenient inference. Both contribute speaker meaning while only the former fixes asserted truth conditions.

Abstract Reasoning

  1. Linguistic form — Supplies decoded words and syntax. Context cannot create an unrelated proposition.
  2. Context — Resolves references, times, places, and senses. The raw sentence may be incomplete.
  3. Pragmatic development — Fills conceptually constrained material. Unlimited inference collapses explicature into implication.
  4. Explicit proposition — Provides truth conditions. A subpropositional string alone cannot be evaluated.
  5. Implicature contrast — Separates conveyed but unstated conclusions. Speaker meaning is broader than explicature.
  6. Relevance evidence — Selects the intended enrichment. Multiple contexts can yield different explicatures.

Knowledge Transfer

Contextual enrichment analysis transfers across utterances when the linguistically constrained explicit proposition remains distinguishable from implicature; any inferred message cannot be promoted to explicature.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Explicature sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (21st percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
