Faceted Vocabulary¶
Describe a referent by selecting one value per orthogonal, independently combinable axis (material, period, function) instead of matching a single precoordinated heading, so N facets of M values express an N×M space while you maintain only the sum of the value lists.
Core Idea¶
A faceted vocabulary separates the dimensions used to describe a referent into orthogonal, independently combinable facets — each an axis (material, period, function, geography, agent) with its own controlled value list. A complete description is assembled by selecting one value per relevant facet rather than by matching a single precoordinated heading. Systematized by Ranganathan's Colon Classification (PMEST), it controls combinatorial explosion.
Scope of Application¶
Lives across the classification-and-retrieval family — one substrate, controlled vocabularies for describing and finding referents, wearing different brand names.
- Library and archival cataloging — LCSH facets and OCLC FAST's decomposition of compound headings.
- Museum and cultural-object documentation — the Getty AAT racking concepts under top-level facets.
- Faceted search interfaces — the e-commerce filter panel (brand × size × color × price).
- Product configurators and parametric catalogs — a configuration as one chosen value per attribute.
Clarity¶
Naming a vocabulary faceted makes an otherwise-buried design choice explicit: build a description by selecting one value per axis (postcoordination) or by matching a composite heading (precoordination). It surfaces the sharp questions the design turns on — are these dimensions genuinely orthogonal, are value lists closed and exclusive, can a user combine any selection without a prebuilt composite?
Manages Complexity¶
A precoordinated approach forces a heading list whose size is the product of the dimensions. Faceting changes what the designer reasons about from the full product space to its factors, so the maintained artifact shrinks to the sum of the value lists while the N×M space stays expressible. Retrieval coverage and bloat diagnosis then read straight off orthogonality rather than being re-derived per query.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The foundational move makes the coordination-timing decision explicit, reasoning from the choice to its combinatorial-coverage and maintenance consequences. A predictive move derives retrieval coverage from orthogonality: a clean factorization makes every cross-section answerable, a failure of orthogonality is where coverage gaps reappear. A diagnostic move localizes bloat to entangled dimensions enumerated as composites, with the interventionist fix of separating the axes.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within the classification-and-retrieval family the design transfers as full mechanism — the orthogonality checklist, the pre/postcoordination distinction, the coverage prediction, and the bloat fix apply term-for-term across cataloging, museum documentation, faceted search, and configurators, because they are one substrate wearing different names. Beyond it, a more general mechanism recurs but the facet machinery does not: the parent paradigmatic_vs_syntagmatic_relations sharpened by orthogonal decomposition carries the traveling insight (separation of variables, basis selection, normalized schemas), while PMEST and the controlled-value-list discipline stay home.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Faceted Vocabulary sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (35th percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
