Fallacy of Composition

Infer that a predicate established for one or all parts must hold of the whole they form, without a warranted preservation rule across aggregation, interaction, scale, configuration, or shared constraints.

Core Idea

The fallacy of composition infers that a predicate true of one or all parts must therefore be true of the whole they compose. The premise about the parts can be correct. The defect is the missing preservation rule across aggregation, interaction, scale, configuration, or shared constraints.

The error is conditional. Additive or closure-preserving predicates can pass from parts to whole when an explicit warrant applies. The Atomistic Fallacy is the multilevel-statistics subtype, adding an individual-level estimate, a group-level target, and contextual variance.

Scope of Application

The fallacy appears in informal logic, economics, organizations, engineering, and system design wherever local truth is promoted to a collective conclusion.

Clarity

Ask: “What makes this predicate survive the operation that creates the whole?” Repeating that every part has the property does not supply the bridge.

Abstract Reasoning

From \(\forall i\,P(x_i)\), one may infer \(P(C(x_1,\ldots,x_n))\) only if \(P\) is preserved under composition operation \(C\). Without that additional premise, the move is unsupported.

Knowledge Transfer

The roles transfer across argumentative settings, but the abstraction remains domain-specific because it is a normative diagnosis of an inference. Aggregation and Emergence carry the observer-free structures that explain particular failures.

Example

One spectator sees better by standing; it does not follow that every spectator will see better if all stand. Universal adoption changes the reference environment and removes the local advantage.
