Grounding (metaphysics)¶
A non-causal metaphysical dependence relation in which one fact or entity obtains in virtue of more fundamental grounds.
Core Idea¶
Metaphysical grounding is the dependence expressed when one fact or entity obtains in virtue of another that is metaphysically more fundamental. The relation is directed: grounds provide the basis, and the grounded is derivative. A standard example says that a singleton set exists in virtue of its member, or that the disjunctive fact ‘4 is even or prime’ obtains in virtue of the fact that 4 is even.
Grounding is commonly distinguished from causation. A cause produces an effect through a temporal or nomological process; a ground metaphysically determines or explains without needing to precede its consequence in time. It is also finer-grained than entailment and supervenience: necessary equivalence can hold between truths that have no in-virtue-of direction, so modal covariance alone does not identify the grounds.
The theory remains contested. Some philosophers treat grounding as metaphysical explanation itself, while others treat it as an objective dependence relation that underwrites explanation. Irreflexivity, asymmetry, transitivity, factivity, non-monotonicity, and well-foundedness have each been proposed or qualified. The abstraction therefore fixes the directed in-virtue-of role without pretending that one formal logic of ground is settled.
Structural Signature¶
Sig role-phrases:
- Ground. Supplies the allegedly more fundamental fact, entity, property, or plurality on which another obtains. Constitutive lower endpoint of the dependence claim. If altered: Substituting an irrelevant truth may preserve entailment while destroying the grounding explanation.
- Grounded. Supplies the derivative fact or entity whose obtaining is at issue. Constitutive upper endpoint: grounding is directed toward what is explained or determined. If altered: Reversing ground and grounded typically reverses explanatory priority and changes or falsifies the claim.
- In-virtue-of dependence. Connects the grounded to its grounds as metaphysical determination rather than temporal production. Identity-bearing relation. If altered: Replacing it with causal succession, correlation, or bare co-necessitation yields another relation.
- Explanatory priority. Orders the relata by relative fundamentality and supports a metaphysical ‘because.’ Commonly constitutive or underwritten, though unionist and separatist accounts disagree about whether grounding just is explanation. If altered: If no direction of priority or relevance is available, the proposed grounding claim lacks its principal work.
What It Is Not¶
- Not causation. Grounding is ordinarily atemporal and metaphysical, whereas causation relates events or states through production or influence.
- Not logical entailment. A conclusion may follow necessarily from irrelevant or symmetrically equivalent truths that do not explain it.
- Not supervenience. Covariation says that no difference at one level occurs without a difference at another; it need not identify an explanatory basis.
- Not automatically material constitution. Parts and wholes may figure in grounding claims, but constitution alone does not settle the direction or explanatory relation.
Scope of Application¶
Grounding is used where metaphysics asks not only what exists but what is fundamental and what obtains in virtue of what.
- Fundamentality. Grounding structures derivative facts or entities relative to a more basic level.
- Truthmaking. A truth may be explained by the reality in virtue of which it is true, though truthmaking and grounding are not simply identical.
- Reduction. Mental, moral, social, or higher-level facts may be claimed to obtain in virtue of lower-level or descriptive facts.
- Logic of ground. Formal systems investigate complete and partial grounds, chains, factivity, transitivity, and explanatory relevance.
Clarity¶
State the ground, the grounded item, the type of relata, and whether the claim concerns full or partial grounding. Explain the direction of priority and why the proposed grounds are relevant rather than merely sufficient for entailment. Identify whether ‘because’ denotes the metaphysical relation itself or an explanation that tracks it, and avoid assuming disputed formal properties without qualification.
Manages Complexity¶
Grounding organizes many dependence claims into a directed architecture of relative fundamentality. It lets metaphysicians compare reduction, truthmaking, and level relations while retaining distinctions among causal, modal, logical, and explanatory dependence. Hyperintensionality and relevance prevent the compression from admitting every necessary truth as a ground.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Type the relata—facts, propositions, entities, properties, or plural grounds—and state the direction from grounds to grounded.
- Ask whether the grounded obtains in virtue of those grounds, not merely whether it follows from or covaries with them.
- Test hyperintensional relevance by substituting necessarily equivalent or irrelevant truths; a genuine ground should not be freely replaceable.
- Separate full from partial grounding and qualify any appeal to transitivity or well-foundedness.
- Compare causal, constitutive, realizational, truthmaking, and grounding explanations before claiming a sui generis relation.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Grounding vocabulary transfers among debates about moral, mental, mathematical, social, and physical reality when the same in-virtue-of and fundamentality claims are intended. It should not be imported merely to make any explanation sound deeper. Scientific causes, logical proofs, and evidential reasons may coexist with grounding, but each must be independently established.
Examples¶
Canonical¶
The fact that 4 is even or prime is grounded in the fact that 4 is even: the latter explains why the disjunction is true without causing it in time.
Mapped back: ground → 4 is even; grounded → 4 is even or prime; in-virtue-of dependence → disjunction true because one disjunct is true; explanatory priority → the evenness fact is the relevant basis.
Applied / In Practice¶
A physicalist may claim that a particular mental state is grounded in an underlying physical state, thereby proposing metaphysical determination rather than merely a reliable correlation.
Mapped back: ground → the specified physical state; grounded → the mental state; in-virtue-of dependence → the mental obtains in virtue of the physical; explanatory priority → the physical is posited as more fundamental.
Structural Tensions¶
T1: grounding relation vs. grounding explanation. Unionists identify the metaphysical relation with explanation; separatists distinguish objective dependence from explanatory representation. Diagnostic: Is the claim ontological, explanatory, or both?
T2: formal order vs. contested exceptions. Asymmetry, transitivity, and well-foundedness support hierarchy but may behave differently for partial or contrastive grounds. Diagnostic: Which kind of grounding and which formal axiom are actually being used?
T3: modal sufficiency vs. hyperintensional relevance. Necessary implication can include truths irrelevant to why the grounded item obtains. Diagnostic: Would substitution of a necessary equivalent preserve the purported explanation?
Structural–Framed Character¶
Metaphysical grounding is predominantly structural, though theory choice frames its interpretation. Evaluative weight: it is not morally evaluative, but it judges explanatory relevance and relative fundamentality. Human-practice-bound: grounding purports to describe reality rather than a convention, yet its formalization is theory-laden. Institutional origin: analytic metaphysics stabilizes the contemporary vocabulary. Vocabulary travels: ‘in virtue of’ travels across ontological domains. Import versus recognize: grounding should be recognized only where metaphysical priority is claimed, not imported as a synonym for any reason. Its character: a directed, hyperintensional dependence relation with contested logic and relata.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
Skeletal core. One item is derivative from another through a directed dependence that supports why the derivative item obtains.
Domain-bound accent. The dependence is metaphysical and commonly atemporal, the order is one of fundamentality, the relation is hyperintensional, and debates concern facts or entities, full or partial ground, and the logic of metaphysical explanation.
Why not prime. Generic dependence and explanation are broader. Grounding adds a specific ontological in-virtue-of claim and a specialist theory of fundamentality; stripping that accent changes the relation rather than revealing the same abstraction everywhere.
Instantiates / Related Primes¶
- Dependence. Grounding is one proposed kind of dependence, distinguished by metaphysical and explanatory priority.
- Explanation. Grounding may be explanation or may underwrite it, depending on the theory adopted.
- Hierarchy. Chains of grounding can organize levels of relative fundamentality, although well-foundedness is disputed.
- The current reviewed DAG placement is retained without adding a generic-dependence edge during prose repair.
Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶

Not to Be Confused With¶
- Causation. Tell: Ask whether the dependence is temporal or productive, or instead an atemporal claim about what obtains in virtue of what.
- Logical entailment. Tell: Entailment can be symmetric among necessary equivalents or padded with irrelevant premises; grounding requires directed explanatory relevance.
- Supervenience. Tell: Supervenience constrains variation but need not identify which facts are fundamental or explanatory.
- Truthmaking. Tell: Truthmaking relates truths to what makes them true; grounding can connect a broader range of facts or entities and theories differ on their relation.
