Guilt by Association

Discredit a claim by the disreputable company it keeps — treating shared supporters, origins, or venues as a verdict on content — a relevance failure that lets no truth-value flow along co-occurrence edges without an independent causal or evidential link.

Core Idea

Guilt by association is the informal fallacy of discrediting a person, claim, or proposal because it shares supporters, origins, venues, or endorsing groups with some discredited third party — without establishing that the discrediting content transfers across the association. The structural defect is a relevance failure: co-membership stands in for substantive connection, when truth-value, moral status, and policy merit do not flow along co-occurrence edges. It is the exact inverse of the ad verecundiam error, and a species of both ad hominem and the genetic fallacy.

With the name, a discussant can make the cut explicit — an attack on supporters or origins is not an attack on content — and demand the missing link. It organizes a sprawling family under one diagnostic — is the attack on the content, or on the company it keeps? — and locates the exact symmetry with appeals to admired authority.

Manages Complexity

A family of moves under many surface names — smear-by-supporter, source-poisoning, reductio ad Hitlerum — collapses to one construct with one diagnostic applied at a glance. The critic tracks a single parameter, the type of the cited link, and reads the whole branch from it: an association link with no transfer shown is the fallacy; a causal or evidential link is a legitimate objection.
