Hand-waving¶
A pejorative description of argument that substitutes vague plausibility, rhetoric or omitted steps for the evidence or derivation required to support a conclusion.
Core Idea¶
Hand-waving is reasoning presented as if adequate while bypassing substantive justification at a point where it matters. Plausible vocabulary, analogy or confident delivery creates an impression of completion, shifting attention away from an unsupported inference. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of reasoning. It is rhetorical simulation of explanatory or deductive completeness.
