Homophony¶
Read a multi-voice passage as a hierarchy of attention — one line carrying the principal melody while the rest defer rhythmically and supply its harmonic context — a vertical relationship that fixes the texture and selects the voice-leading machinery to analyze it.
Core Idea¶
Homophony is the musical texture in which one voice carries the principal melodic interest while the rest provide rhythmically coordinated, harmonically subordinate support. It is defined by a vertical hierarchy of foreground melody over background accompaniment, distinguishing it from polyphony (equal independent lines) and monophony (a single unaccompanied line). Its varieties — strict homorhythm and accompanied melody — share the constant of accompaniment subordinated to one line.
