Immanent critique¶
A critical method that evaluates a social form by exposing contradictions between its own professed norms and its realized institutions or practices.
Core Idea¶
Immanent critique reconstructs a culture or institution’s internal standards and shows how its operation frustrates, reverses, or selectively applies them without relying only on an external ideal. The critic juxtaposes normative self-description with patterned outcomes, making contradiction generate pressure for transformation from within the form’s own commitments. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
