Invitational rhetoric¶
A rhetorical theory seeking mutual understanding through equality, immanent value and self-determination rather than aiming primarily to change the audience.
Core Idea¶
Foss and Griffin’s framework distinguishes offering perspectives and creating conditions of safety, value and freedom from persuasion conceived as control, while later scholarship debates whether invitation can avoid influence. A rhetor presents a perspective without demanding assent, listens to alternative accounts and structures interaction so participants can enter, decline or revise understanding without coercive pressure. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
