Line of Flight¶
A deterritorializing trajectory within an assemblage that enables escape, new connection, and transformation while remaining vulnerable to capture.
Core Idea¶
In Deleuze and Guattari, a line of flight is an escape or deterritorializing tendency within an assemblage that opens new connections and transformation while also risking capture, destruction, or reterritorialization.
A practice escapes an institution's fixed roles and composes a new collective relation. A subcultural escape is commodified and stabilized as a market category.
Structural Signature¶
Sig role-phrases:
- Assemblage — Supplies the heterogeneous arrangement being changed. It is carrier. Counterfactual: An isolated individual move loses the relational object.
- Territorial lines — Stabilize identities and organization. It is baseline. Counterfactual: No constraint means no escape relation.
- Line of flight — Breaks or leaves established relations. It is transform. Counterfactual: A route preserving all organization is not flight.
- New connection — Creates alternative arrangement or becoming. It is productive side. Counterfactual: Escape need not mean simple disappearance.
- Reterritorialization — Can capture and stabilize the escape anew. It is countermove. Counterfactual: Treating flight as permanent freedom is incomplete.
- Destructive risk — Marks abolition or collapse rather than creative change. It is limit. Counterfactual: Every flight is not emancipatory.
What It Is Not¶
- It is not literal geography.
- It is not every social change.
- It is not guaranteed liberation.
- It is not individual avoidance detached from an assemblage.
- Closest near-miss. A reform inside existing institutional coordinates may be change but not a line of flight if it leaves territorial relations intact.
Scope of Application¶
- Philosophy. Analyzes assemblages and becoming.
- Political theory. Studies escape and capture.
- Cultural studies. Tracks subcultural transformation.
- Art theory. Describes compositional departure.
Clarity¶
Include assemblage-level processes that deterritorialize established relations and open a materially different configuration. Exclude literal travel, ordinary avoidance, incremental adaptation that preserves the assemblage, and automatic celebration of change.
Manages Complexity¶
Deterritorialization can open novelty while inviting rapid reorganization. Breaking structure may compose a new assemblage or destroy capacity.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Assemblage — Supplies the heterogeneous arrangement being changed. An isolated individual move loses the relational object.
- Territorial lines — Stabilize identities and organization. No constraint means no escape relation.
- Line of flight — Breaks or leaves established relations. A route preserving all organization is not flight.
- New connection — Creates alternative arrangement or becoming. Escape need not mean simple disappearance.
- Reterritorialization — Can capture and stabilize the escape anew. Treating flight as permanent freedom is incomplete.
- Destructive risk — Marks abolition or collapse rather than creative change. Every flight is not emancipatory.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Analyzing an assemblage's escape and transformation can transfer across social and artistic cases, but a literal route or any change cannot be relabeled without deterritorializing relations.
Examples¶
Applied / In Practice¶
A practice escapes an institution's fixed roles and composes a new collective relation.
Mapped back: source → assemblage; movement → deterritorialization; result → new linkage.
Applied / In Practice¶
A subcultural escape is commodified and stabilized as a market category.
Mapped back: flight → present; result → reterritorialization.
Structural Tensions¶
T1 — Escape versus Capture. Deterritorialization can open novelty while inviting rapid reorganization.
Diagnostic: What new apparatus captures it?
T2 — Creation versus Abolition. Breaking structure may compose a new assemblage or destroy capacity.
Diagnostic: What relations survive or emerge?
Structural–Framed Character¶
Supplies the heterogeneous arrangement being changed. Stabilize identities and organization. Deterritorialization can open novelty while inviting rapid reorganization.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
Can capture and stabilize the escape anew. Marks abolition or collapse rather than creative change. The concept exits when escape creates no new relation or is immediately reduced to metaphorical movement alone.

Line of Flight is a kind of Deterritorialization Domain-specific
Line of Flight is a strict kind of Deterritorialization: it is the trajectory by which an assemblage escapes existing territorial relations and forms new connections.Every reviewed Line of Flight instance satisfies Deterritorialization because it is the trajectory by which an assemblage escapes existing territorial relations and forms new connections. The child adds the domain-specific restrictions stated in its frozen identity. Deterritorialization is broader and can occur without the restrictions that define Line of Flight.
