Markedness Model¶
Myers-Scotton’s sociolinguistic account of language choice as indexing or negotiating expected and alternative rights-and-obligations sets through unmarked, marked, exploratory, or sequential code choices.
Core Idea¶
Carol Myers-Scotton’s Markedness Model explains language choice and code-switching as social indexical action. Participants associate a communicative setting with an expected, unmarked rights-and-obligations (RO) set. Selecting that expected code acknowledges the prevailing relationship; selecting a marked code can propose a different RO set. Exploratory and sequential choices handle ambiguity or changing interactional goals.[1]
The recognition invariant is community-conditioned expectations + code choice + marked/unmarked contrast + indexed RO set + negotiation of interactional relations.
Structural Signature¶

What It Is Not¶
It is not generic linguistic markedness, which contrasts asymmetrical category members across phonology, grammar, and semantics. It is not Code Switching itself, but one proposed model of its social motivation. It is also distinct from the Matrix Language Frame model, which addresses morphosyntactic production constraints.[2]
The model should not be reported as proof that every switch is fully conscious, individually optimizing, or reducible to one stable community norm.
Scope of Application¶
The model has been applied to multilingual conversation, status negotiation, solidarity and distance, workplace encounters, literary dialogue, and broader language-variety choice. It asks what relationship a code indexes in a community and what interactional change a departure may propose.[3]
Conversation-analytic critics argue that analyst-assigned social categories or presumed intentions can outrun sequential evidence. Application should therefore compare participant uptake, local sequence, and ethnographic norms rather than infer motive from code alone.[4]
Clarity¶
“Unmarked” means expected for a particular interaction type, not universally neutral or morally preferred. “Marked” means socially noticeable relative to that expectation, not linguistically ill-formed. An RO set is an analytic model of relational expectations, not necessarily a spoken contract.
Manages Complexity¶
The model organizes heterogeneous social meanings into a small decision architecture: infer the expected relationship, observe the code selected, compare it with alternatives, and test whether the choice maintains, challenges, explores, or sequences RO sets.
Abstract Reasoning¶
- Identify participants, setting, topic, and available codes.
- Establish community evidence for the expected unmarked choice.
- State the associated RO set without treating it as universal.
- Locate switches and their sequential positions.
- Compare marked, unmarked, exploratory, and sequential readings.
- Test proposed motives against prosody, metacommentary, uptake, and subsequent turns.
- Consider alternative interactional and grammatical explanations.
- Preserve uncertainty when evidence does not identify one intention.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The portable structure is a conventionally expected signal contrasted with a salient alternative used to negotiate relations. The proposed immediate parent is Code Switching.
Examples¶
Marked switch. A speaker changes to a high-status code in an informal exchange to propose greater distance or authority, if local evidence supports that reading.
Exploratory choice. Participants alternate codes while testing which relationship and footing will govern a new encounter.
Non-example. A switch caused solely by lexical retrieval, with no supported social-indexical contrast, does not automatically instantiate the model.

The portable core is choosing between conventional and salient signals to maintain or renegotiate relations. RO sets, code repertoires, speaker uptake, and sociolinguistic evidence are constitutive accent.
