Core Idea

Carol Myers-Scotton’s Markedness Model explains language choice and code-switching as social indexical action. Participants associate a communicative setting with an expected, unmarked rights-and-obligations (RO) set. Selecting that expected code acknowledges the prevailing relationship; selecting a marked code can propose a different RO set. Exploratory and sequential choices handle ambiguity or changing interactional goals.

The recognition invariant is community-conditioned expectations + code choice + marked/unmarked contrast + indexed RO set + negotiation of interactional relations.

Scope of Application

The model has been applied to multilingual conversation, status negotiation, solidarity and distance, workplace encounters, literary dialogue, and broader language-variety choice. It asks what relationship a code indexes in a community and what interactional change a departure may propose.

Conversation-analytic critics argue that analyst-assigned social categories or presumed intentions can outrun sequential evidence. Application should therefore compare participant uptake, local sequence, and ethnographic norms rather than infer motive from code alone.

Clarity

“Unmarked” means expected for a particular interaction type, not universally neutral or morally preferred. “Marked” means socially noticeable relative to that expectation, not linguistically ill-formed. An RO set is an analytic model of relational expectations, not necessarily a spoken contract.

Manages Complexity

The model organizes heterogeneous social meanings into a small decision architecture: infer the expected relationship, observe the code selected, compare it with alternatives, and test whether the choice maintains, challenges, explores, or sequences RO sets.

  7. Consider alternative interactional and grammatical explanations.
  8. Preserve uncertainty when evidence does not identify one intention.
