Moral perception¶
The discernment of morally salient features in a particular situation that structures what an agent notices before or within explicit moral deliberation.
Core Idea¶
Moral perception is the discernment of morally salient features in a particular situation. It concerns what an agent notices—harm, vulnerability, unfairness, dependence, obligation, or another ethically relevant quality—before or within the conscious deliberation that produces a moral judgment. The concept distinguishes feature uptake from final judgment. The concept distinguishes feature uptake from final judgment.
Scope of Application¶
The construct applies to ethically charged practical situations where what an agent notices conditions later reasoning or response. The concept applies to practical situations where feature-level attention shapes later reasoning or response.
- Clinical ethics. A practitioner notices dependence, dignity, or unvoiced vulnerability.
- Everyday conduct. Small cues reveal exclusion, coercion, or unmet need.
- Professional judgment. Experience tunes attention to morally consequential particulars.
- Moral education. Cases and exemplars can cultivate richer salience sensitivity.
- Moral psychology. Experiments investigate speed, attention, affect, and individual differences.
Clarity¶
Name the concrete feature perceived, why it is morally relevant, how it differs from the later verdict, and what evidence supports the claimed uptake. Distinguish perceptual phenomenology from reaction time or self-report. Consider false positives, omissions, cultural learning, and motivated attention. The closest near miss sets the boundary: Moral intuition is the closest near miss: intuition often names a quick evaluative seeming or verdict, whereas moral perception emphasizes noticing the particular features that make a situation morally significant.
Manages Complexity¶
The abstraction explains why agents who know the same rules can reason differently: they may structure the situation around different salient particulars. Separating attention from verdict exposes where experience helps, where bias enters, and where deliberation must revisit an initial framing. The central immediacy–reflection tradeoff is this: Rapid salience can guide action but also carry unexamined bias. A second particularity–general principle tension matters because Attention to context prevents mechanical rule use but can make consistency harder. The cultivation–perspectival variation tension adds that Experience can improve discernment while social position also filters attention.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Use three linked moves: describe the situation before naming the moral conclusion; identify which features become salient and which remain backgrounded; explain the ethical relevance those features appear to carry. As a collapse test, the case exits when no morally salient feature is noticed in the concrete situation or when the alleged perception is only the final action judgment. A fourth check is to separate immediate uptake from explicit weighing of reasons and final judgment. A final check is to test perception against omitted perspectives, counterexamples, and evidence of bias.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Salience-sensitive perception transfers across care, justice, professional practice, and everyday ethics when feature uptake is tied to moral reasons. Calling any quick dislike a moral perception is overextension. No canonical parent prime is currently asserted; broader structural comparisons remain related-prime analogies until separately adjudicated in the DAG. Some situation features stand out as action-relevant. Selective uptake shapes the represented case.
Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Moral perception sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (39th percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
