Neutral monism¶
Hold that ultimate reality has one fundamental kind whose intrinsic nature is neither mental nor physical, while mental and physical phenomena are derivative organizations or aspects of that neutral basis.
Core Idea¶
Neutral monism is the family of monistic metaphysical views on which ultimate reality is fundamentally of one kind whose intrinsic nature is neither mental nor physical, while mental and physical entities or properties depend on, are composed from, or are ways of organizing that neutral basis. The view locates the familiar mind-matter distinction at a derivative level and explains both sides through relations, groupings, structures, or functional roles instantiated by neutral elements, aiming to avoid a primitive bridge between two independent substances.
Scope of Application¶
Neutral monism applies when the analyst can specify a metaphysical theory specifying fundamental entities or properties, mental phenomena, physical phenomena, and dependence relations between the fundamental and derivative levels and establish that one ultimate kind is affirmed, its intrinsic character is neutral under a stated criterion, and both mental and physical reality are explained as nonfundamental formations or classifications of it. The entry reconstructs a family of philosophical positions and their objections. It does not present neutral monism as a scientific finding, a clinical account of consciousness, or a settled solution to the mind-body problem.
Clarity¶
A clear claim names the carrier, governing rule, assumptions, and recognition test. This matters because neutral can mean neither mental nor physical, constituent of both, available to both laws, intrinsically both, or simply not characterized by current physics, and those readings produce materially different theories. Manages Complexity¶

A responsible use therefore declares basic entity type, criterion of neutrality, plurality of basic entities, grouping relation, mentality, physicality, causation, emergence, phenomenal awareness, historical author, textual period, and realist commitment and returns to the full diagnostic whenever a convention or boundary case changes.
