Performative Contradiction¶
Expose a conflict between what an utterance asserts and a condition its very performance pragmatically presupposes.
Core Idea¶
A performative contradiction occurs when an utterance's content denies a condition that its own performance pragmatically presupposes. The conflict is between act and content, not necessarily between two propositions in the sentence itself.[^ref-25bbb5779abc]
Scope of Application¶
The test applies in speech-act analysis, epistemology and discourse ethics when the relevant act and its genuinely necessary presupposition can be identified. Hintikka's reading of presently thinking “I do not exist” is one example; alleged contradictions in discourse require a separate argument about what assertion or argumentation necessarily invokes.[ref-967ba4c48d35][ref-25bbb5779abc]
Clarity¶
The diagnosis separates logical form from pragmatic performance. A sentence may be semantically coherent while its current first-person act invokes a condition its content denies; that is the defining test, not an intrinsic opposed-cost tradeoff. It is not merely hypocrisy, and quoting someone else's self-denial is not the same as asserting one's own. Nor does finding one discourse presupposition directly justify an entire moral theory.[ref-25bbb5779abc][ref-967ba4c48d35]
Manages Complexity¶
Map act, necessary condition, content, speaker and time before calling an utterance self-defeating. This prevents a rhetorical accusation from concealing a controversial theory of speech acts in the word “presupposes.”
Abstract Reasoning¶
Let act A necessarily invoke P in the relevant context. If performing A asserts not-P, the same episode conflicts at act and content levels. If P is optional, the content is only quoted, or the speaker/time changes, that argument fails.
Knowledge Transfer¶
The act–presupposition–content test transfers among first-person thought and argumentative assertions, but their presuppositions do not transfer by analogy. Each case requires its own account of why the condition is unavoidable.
