Phenomenal conservatism¶
The epistemic principle that if it seems to a subject that p, that seeming supplies prima facie justification for believing p unless defeated by contrary evidence or reliability concerns.

Phenomenal conservatism holds that an appearance or seeming that p gives the subject at least some defeasible justification for believing p by virtue of that seeming. Seemings provide an immediate justificatory starting point without requiring antecedent beliefs about reliability. Defeaters—conflict, known distortion, incoherence, or stronger evidence—can undercut or rebut the initial warrant. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
