Prohairesis¶
The deliberative moral choice or faculty of assent that ancient Greek ethics, especially Epictetus's Stoicism, treats as properly one's own and central to agency and character.
Core Idea¶
Aristotle develops prohairesis as reasoned desire concerning means to action, while Epictetus makes the prohairetic faculty the controllable locus of assent, aversion, intention, and moral good amid uncontrollable externals. An impression appears, the agent examines it under judgments and values, gives or withholds assent, forms an intention or choice, and thereby owns the moral quality of the response even when external outcomes remain uncontrolled. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
